Type in location name in "Start"
Type in desired destination in "End"

That's not what I asked. I asked how to plot directions between two
points I *select on the map*, not addresses I type in a box (assuming I
even know the addresses).

I find it rather incredible that what I consider to be a basic feature
of any direction-plotting mapping program could be missing from Apple
Maps.

I am coming to realise that the mapping software is being moved to
"driving" software. In order words, "tell me how to get THERE from HERE".

Even google is screwing with its mapping web site to make it less
mapping and more about directions (and ads)

When things are driven bty what markting think mass markert wants, real
cartographers start to see features disappear.

Remember that when Apple Maps launched, one of its huge advantages over
the then existing goole map product on IOS was driving directions.

Well, I certainly goofed in not recognizing the critical importance to
you in clicking rather than typing. Sorry.

You goofed in not recognizing that a visual UI should allow visual
selection of start and end points ... as Google maps has been doing for
a very long time (over 10 years, at least).

That's your should, and not mine. But a pin drop any where give a
"Directions to here" and if you know where you started, a piece of cake.

And by extension a "Directions from here" pin (rather than where Maps
apps believes it is) is easy to add to the dropdown list. As Google
Maps has had for a decade.

Of course my iMac doesn't know where it is (as WiFi is off) so the whole
"Directions to here" can't work with the pin.

It's really poorly thought out. There is no excuse for it at all.

Being able to click on the map to select both the start and end points
is someting I consider a basic feature. If I'm already looking on
the map at the corner of Aleksandra Nevskogo Pereulok and 2-Ya
Tverskaya-Yamskaya Ulitsa, I'd really rather just click there than have
to type out the whole damn thing. You must really like to type if you
think the difference is superficial.

Especially when your spelling of the place name may differ just slightly
from the actual spelling and that again from the "Apple" spelling in the
database resulting in "not found" reports. (This happens on Google Maps
as well - finding towns in South Korea, for example, can be tedious due
to variations in western representation).

You can't point at a location and right click to say "directions to
here" and another location for "directions from here" as you can so
easily in Google Maps. Apple Maps will allow a pin drop and then
navigation is assumed to be from where you are. Bad assumption for
planning.

You can (in Apple Maps) enter an address (or simply a town name) for
such planning but that sort of defeats the purpose of a visual interface.
