Modifying the source and recompiling will never be "easy" for any but a

Sept 2014 not new enough, huh? Indeed, it may have a newer update as
that was Darwin 14.0 and Darwin is at 14.1.0 now.

Since I still have a G4 PPC, I am not up to date on the newest. I am
going to get a newer refurbed iMac, and was just wondering how often that
Apple does update their kernel, as I use Linux and get kernel updates
pretty regularly.
Do Apple kernels add new features, or do they just patch security issues,
or both?

Yes. With hardware evolution, having the support down at the metal
level is important.

Kernel updates appear at at least each new major OS release and there
are occasionally 'fixes' along the way.

Don't sweat it. OS X (Mac) is a $20B+ business for Apple. They do keep
it up to date.

I bought an Apple refurbished 2012 iMac and it has been stellar. Well,
if you ignore that Time Machine screw up, anyway. It came with 8 GB of
RAM and I slapped in an additional 16.

Add VMWare Fusion and you can run Linux as well. Concurrently.

The kernel is updated for every major version of OS X (e.g. OS X 10.10
Yosemite), almost every minor version (e.g. the 10.10.2 update) and
sometimes in security updates (e.g. the latest Security Update 2015-002
included a kernel update for Yosemite).

> Do Apple kernels add new features, or do they just patch security issues,
> or both?

Same general rules apply for kernel updates as for the entire OS:

- A new major version of OS X (e.g. OS X 10.10 Yosemite) typically
introduces new features. It may also include bug fixes and security
fixes. If Apple has chosen to remove support for an old software feature
or old Mac models, this almost always happens as part of a new major
version of OS X.

- Minor version updates (e.g. OS X 10.10.2) are mostly bug fixes and
security fixes, plus adding support for recently introduced Mac models
and peripherals. Sometimes they make minor feature changes, or reinstate
features which had been removed earlier.

- Security updates (e.g. Security Update 2015-002) only fix security
issues.

Something about making money.

If people keep their computers for a long time, Apple sales go down. And
with a business model where the OS updates are now free, there is no
incentive to provide software updates to older hardware.

Unless...

Apple gave software updates for free to hardware that is 2 years old or
less, and made software available for purchase if you have older hardware.

That explains why 10.8, 10.9, and 10.10 run on *all* the same hardware,
and nearly the same hardware as 10.7. Yep, greedy Apple.

One thing you can count on: JF Mezei will troll Apple whenever the
chance arises, and will very rarely (if ever) actually say anything kind
about the company. He's such a hater.

Excuse me ? What is unkind about stating that Apple is in business to
sell hardware and not give you free OS upgrades for your 10 year old
computer ?

I did not make any comparison against other vendors, and did not say
whether Apple was better, same or worse than other vendors.

You are the one who is going out of your way to interpret my post as a
slant against Apple. That is what you do. That is all you can do.

Maligned ? Really ?

Apple is in business to make money. It's business model is to sell
hardware. Is that maligning the company when I state that ? And if your
business model is to sell hardware, then you want people to upgrade as
often as possible.

This in no way passes judgement on Apple, and in no way says that Apple
is bad or that it is worse or better than other companies in terms of
how long Apple expects to support hardware. In fact, Apple is better
than the others in supporting older hardware. But it is still in
business to make money and that means selling hardware.

Apple doesn't purposely degrade support for older hardware to force
people to upgrade.

degrade ? Did I say "degrade" ?

It simply stops producing software for older hardware. Nothing wrong
with that. But it has the side effect of inciting people to upgrade
hardware. I didn't say "force". So please stop putting words in my mind
to twist everything I say to allow you to accuse me of being a troll
against Apple.

Glad you agree.

Nothing wrong with that.

Nevertheless, you still haven't properly addressed the original question
which was why Apple doesn't continually update the kernel (which they
actually do). Your response "to make money" was disingenuous, and you
refuse to admit it. You are trolling, as usual.

I don't have to put words in your mouth. The words you speak are
sufficient.

So you agree I didn't disagree and that accusations of my denigrating

I was responding to message about upgrades to older hardware. Not about
kernel upgrades generically.

By the time a computer is not supported by the current OS, it's usually
time to replace the computer for other reasons.

When Mountain Lion came out in July 2011, I had a late 2006 iMac, which
was the newest model that could not run Mountain Lion. That's support
going back five years.  Yosemite can run on Macs that came out in 2007;
that's going back eight years.

If what you allege is true, the OS wouldn't be able to run on machines
more than two years old.

You have been told this before, but fail to acknowledge it, so yes, you
are trolling.

It's all he does, when you think about it. Rarely, if ever, does he say
anything about Apple that might be seen in a good light.

Or that may be factually based.
