The guy likes Windows 10 with the hardware the Mac provides.

To install over all platforms is one of the reasons Microsoft is giving
away free Windows 10! I would never install this POS on anything except
a VirtualBox. I will only install Linux/OSX for my main computers.

What's right for you can't be wrong. But if you were running heavy-duty
image-processing applications in Windows you might imagine running
Windows natively on a Mac.

After that addled thought process I'd come to my senses and buy a
barebone kit from Tiger Direct or Direct Canada with the appropriate
killer CPU and GPU and build a Windows machine.

I can't for the life of me imagine buying a Windows-only machine when
I've got six Macs in the house, any one of which could be a powerful
Windows machine. Two of them are, in fact.

Your situation is the only one out there?

If the goal was to have a machine for "running heavy duty
image-processing applications in Windows" then there would be no point
in getting a Mac in the first place. Just build the beast.

That said, it would probably cost less to get a Mac Pro as you get 2
high end graphics processors included for far less than the cost of
buying the same GPU boards for a PC.

Ah, you're thinking Photoshop, video editing, that sort of thing. I
would never dream of running those things under Windows. Why would I
ever run anything under Windows that was available for the Mac? I'm
talking about applications that aren't available for the Mac,
specifically a few astro-image processing applications such as
AstroArt, AIP4WIN, CCDStack and MaximDL.

In fact my late-model Retina 5K iMac w. 32GB RAM is quite satisfactory
for all of my needs. So is my MBP Retina SSD with only 16GB RAM.

I wasn't referring to anything specific other than the OP's restriction
of Windows. Therefore if I had a heavy graphics processing need that
had to be under Windows then I would simply build a Windows machine -
not boot a Mac under Windows.

But your needs are not the high end graphics processing referred to in
the OP.

Current iMacs tend to have lower powered GPU's than high end graphics
oriented computers. I have an i7 driven iMac with 24 GB of RAM and it
is clear that graphics are a bottleneck with some high definition video.
Thankfully that isn't especially important to me.

The current best option 5K iMac GPU is the AMD Radeon R9 M295X which is
a laptop GPU. Nothing to sneeze at - but not the best GPU out there by
a wide margin. I guess power/heat issues are the limiting factors due
to the ridiculously over slimmed iMac case.

Only games, I think.

Of course, real heavy duty image processing I'd do in OS X.

I used Bootcamp with Win10 recently for accessing my Micro 3D printer,
but now that the Mac software is in pre-alpha testing I've removed
bootcamp from my MBP.
