OS X 10.10/iOS 8 are huge massive major updates. "Just application
improvements" is not just silly, but not even accurate. The deep
integration of iCloud/iOS/Continuity.

Fair enough. So they added a file system driver for iCloud along with
nfs, afs and smb right ? I assume icloud would be implemented at that
level ?

iCloud Drive is one of *many* things - the tip of the ice burg. If you
really want to know what Apple is doing under the hood, the information
is readily available all over the web. Apple's own web site offers tons
of details about what's changing. I would think the smart thing to do
would be to investigate for yourself rather than just assuming only
UI candy and applications are being updated.

MacWorld UK has compared some of the OS X Mavericks 10.9 Dock icons
with the new versions in OS X Yosemite 10.10:

Certainly not an improvement. And one must wonder, this kind of
mindless, needless rework is the most urgent thing OS X developers have
to work on?!? Zheesh!

That's what happens when you put an object designer in charge of
software ... Johnny Ive simply doesn't know what he's doing. :-(

Meh. I kinda like them, personally. Then again, I'm a software developer
by trade, and very much a power user; so I don't let little things like
tints and shades and translucency stop me from getting my work done, and
I certainly don't focus my time bitching and moaning about font size and
icon design.

I like the flat look... but that blue folder is a retina burner.
Two steps forward, one step back.

While it lasts, they're available for downloading at:

Note: the folder isn't included, thankfully.

Starts around 45. You find yourself holding the newspaper farther away from
your face than usual. And it's downhill from there...

Since Apple likely has no employees above that age except Tim Cook,
there is nobody there to test the UI for old aged people like us.

And since it is developped in an area without public transit, there is
nobody to test the iPhone's usability as you run for the bus, or on
shaky roads like in Québec where things bounce around a lot.

Removing the large clock in lock screen when music is playing is once
such good example of Apple developpers not using iphones in everyday
normal life outside of California.

there is public transit there, including busses that go by apple and
apple's own shuttles to bart & caltrain.

I'm not a dev. by any stretch, and I also don't give a rat's ass about
such. Nor did I cry and moan when OSX "ruined" the beautiful look of Mac
OS 9, or 8 or 7, etc.

OS X didn't "ruin the look" of OS 9 ... the first few releases of OS X
completely trashed the usable, functioning OS 9 and replaced it with a
horrible mess missing many of the features.

Ah, yes, the tragedy, O! The humanity! My details were wrong for you,
but the sentiment you express is right on the money.

The only thing I really prefer in 10.9 over the 10.10 version is the
trashcan.

The pen in the notes app also, but the overall icon is better in 10.10.

Across the board, the icons are cleaner (less busy, less extra
adornment). This is especially obvious in, for example, the Calendar
icon (gone are the metal hoops) and the Safari logo.

That said, the biggest change in 10.10 is seeing it on a retina display.
10.9 looks spotty and old on retina compared to 10.10.

And, while it was regarded as pretty good evidence of criminality to be
living in a slum, for some reason owning a whole street of them merely
got you invited to the very best social occasions.
