Looks like the experience aged him quite a bit. (I wonder if Borowitz
will post MS's "face-saving" explanation.) ;-)

I wish that Borowitz would retire; his columns are funny at most once
every other month, but usually not that often. He uses a sledgehammer
where he should be using a scalpel.I'm not necessarily referring to
this article, but to his entire body of work over the past few years.

I've installed Windows 8.1 a few times now (in a few different places).
I don't know what all the fuss is about. Tidy it up a bit, boot straight
to the desktop, automatic login, it works okay. I don't even mind the
"metro apps." Of course, I'm not a Winders guy to begin with, and I
don't have any nostalgia for the, ah, "classic" look which seemed to
mean that you right-click on the start button and your screen fills up
with crap. Their version of "Launch Pad" is a bit of a mess, but I don't
use it much on OS X either.

The 8.1 upgrade did an excellent job of freeing up disk space. I gather
that this was driven by the need to do that for the 16GB tablet thingies,
but it demonstrates that MS can do things properly when they really want to.

I have never understood the desire to hang onto that "classic" look either,
and intensely disliked that screenful of crap. I did use the alternative
shell available from classicshell.org for Windows 8.0, but I chose the
Windows 7 lookalike rather than the "classic" one. According to the notes
at classicshell.org the classic shell could be driven by one letter key
presses in an efficient manner, but I simply didn't use Windows often
enough to memorize that stuff.

To be honest I have so little use of Windows nowadays that I only fire it
up each Patch Tuesday to keep it up to date. Murphy's Law of course dictates
that if I delete Windows, there will be a compelling reason to put it back
a week later, so for now it stays, but nicely parked away in a virtual
machine.

That's where mine is. It's pretty snappy on the iMac. I'm going to put
it on my Zotac eventually, and use Windows for my HTPC (Netflix USA
mostly).

I am now compleately reassured that Microsoft has got such a bright
technology advisor...
