Never say you only shot to wound, or just fired a warning shot. your only justification to shoot is to stop a deadly threat, either to yourself or to another person. Law Enforcement doesn't train to kill, wound, or fire warning shots, they train to stop the threat. That usually means shooting at center of mass, a double tap from most of the usual duty weapons (38 SP, 357Mag, 9mm, or 45 ACP, along with some of the modern rounds available) to the chest will do a pretty good job of stopping any threat. A warning shot is a miss. A wound is dumb luck, or evidence of a healthy constitution for the assailant. Forget about the Hollywood shot to wound, or to the head (a moving head is tough to hit) and if the assailant is carrying a blade don't let them get closer than 15-20 feet. So, shoot to stop the threat. once that is done stop shooting. If the assailant is running from you don't shoot, there is no threat. If the assailant is down and wounded, don't finish him/her off. If you do you will be dealing with a D.A.. -- Regards, Savageduck

If you empty your gun, you're in good company with the vast majority of
self-defense shootings, so empty your gun.

Oh, I fully agree; unfortunately, all too many firearms owners don't
understand that simple principle.

Again, fully agree.

And if they do get close and you don't have a firearm, get inside the
danger radius before trying to fight back.

What's a nightstand? Something for you to piss into during the night?
Actually what happens is that all these brave people with guns keep
them by the front door. Then the poor lost tourist or traveller whose
car has broken down, who knocks on the door seeking help, can just be
shot through the door with no further ado.

Small cabinet / table next to the bed (in may case it's actually a
small bookcase without any drawers). For double beds they are sold as a
set of two matching cabinets. Sometimes they are built-in as part of
the headboard. These days many people don't have them at all.

So, a bedside cabinet then - or do yours vanish during the day?

Depends if you have a foldaway bed that disappears into a wall caviy.
;-)
The term "nightstand" probably comes from ye olde days when it was used
as a place to "stand" objects ready for the morning (glasses, false
teeth) or for use during the night (a glass of water). Often there was
a cupboard or drawer in the bottom to store the potty as well, so your
first reply was partially correct.

On mine is a stack of books, a telephone (the only wired one in the
house, useful during power cuts), a radio (we always wake up to the
Today programme), and a bottle of water.

Yeah. That's why they have drawers to piss in. You familiar with pissing in
your drawers?

No. That was the current VEEP of the USA. He like to fire indiscreetly at
everything and tells others to do so...

And improperly trained women experiencing interesting results...

No. But +1 for trying, George. Oh, you *are* called George. How bout
that then.

And you use... MAC OS X?!? Oh, you mean the proof Apple could not make their own successful system from scratch and had to rely on UNIX?

Apple did make their own, which in many ways is STILL better than Mac OS X ... the problem is that the morons in charge got scared and thought it wasn't "good enough", and instead moved to Mac OS X which for the first few releases was a horrible backwards step of a mess and looks like the newer releases are going back there with lots of added unnecessary silliness. Mac OS X 10.10 is reportedly going to be "flatter" (although not as "flat" as iOS) thanks to Jonny Ive's complete incomptenece when it comes to software design. :-(
