Certainly the "Xmas isn't what it used to be" or the "Xmas has been commercialized" and all that stuff. But making it a war by godless secularists against defenseless Christianity? I'm pretty sure Fox owns it. The first I heard of a "war on Xmas" was when it became branded by O'Reilly around 2004: http://thismodernworld.com

It's more that the fanatical fundies have spent the last 20 years or so on their "keep the christ in christmas" crusade, completely ignoring that for the most part everything about christmas is now and ever has been secular (or pagan). Christmas traditions that have to do with christer faith: Going to church, many christmas carols. Christmas traditions that have nothing to do with christer faith: Presents, Tree, christmas Dinner, Yule Log, mulled wine, hot cider, lights, parties, mistletoe, celebrating a major religious holiday in the depths of winter, Stockings, gift-distributing spirit with naughty/nice list, and just about anything else you can think of that is associated with "christmas." Almost all the traditions pre-date christianity and come to us from the Celts, Romans, or Norse. The very placement of the mass in the middle of December (which would not be anywhere near the time any Jesus person would have been born, assuming there ever was such a person) was specifically to compete with/replace the Roman Saturnalia, so December 25th has absolutely nothing to do with christianity. So when the neighbor puts up a "keep the christ in christmas" sign in their yard along with a lighted up tree... well, ignorance is bliss, I suppose. I'm sure they don't know those lights are a prayer to the forest spirits to ensure the return of spring. -- Nothing says poor craftsmanship more than wrinkled duct tape.

What should a Christian do after he lights his xmas tree? Wine appears 39 times. Santa doesn't appear, but Satan is mentioned 17 times. Back then, he was revered even though Job had found out he didn't always bring nice kids nice presents. If Peter and Paul and maligned you the way they maligned Satan, you, too, would have changed your name to Santa. > > Almost all the traditions pre-date christianity and come to us from the > Celts, Romans, or Norse. > > The very placement of the mass in the middle of December (which would > not be anywhere near the time any Jesus person would have been born, > assuming there ever was such a person) was specifically to compete > with/replace the Roman Saturnalia, so December 25th has absolutely > nothing to do with christianity. There's no December in the gospels, but May appears 95 times. Spring, Winter, and Summer each appear 3 times, but Fall appears 26. The fact that May is now in the Spring, shows how much seasonal creep occurred during the 754 years of the Julian calendar.

Yes, but let's go back to the REAL reason for the season, the tilt of the earth's axis and the winter (northern hemisphere) solstice. There is absolutely nothing wrong with selling more beers. And some
of our local beers are terrific.
I found a stall in Town at our Christmas Market (yes, "Christmas
Market", it has a large sign calling it that) that sells some truly
lovely beers. And ales and stouts, too. Also a very nice girl young
enough to be my grandchild made me a wonderful bisonburger-in-a-bap.
That in itself was worth the trip into Town.
I might not *do* Christmas any more but I still like the fact that
you lot do.
You can't find a good bisonburger anywhere in July.

Happy Annual Celebration Of The End Of The World, everyone. It ended
last year, on the 21st. The anniversary is this Saturday. Saturn's
Day. A good excuse for a Saturnalia?
And remember the birth of the third last prophet, Joseph Smith, on
the 23rd of December, that's this Monday, coming.
Two good reasons to party?

Easy enough. I'm not keen on baps, personally. Too soggy. For the washed and unwashed 'Murkins, and all the others in that
truly great nation, (not sarcasm, I really do think it's a great and
wonderful experiment and hope it succeeds) a "bap" is a bun, a roll, a
small round loaf of bread usually cut in half and filled with stuff.
It's a more convenient form of "bagel" without the hole in the middle.
Baps are fantastic for making hand-meals out of sticky, hot or greasy
stuff like jams, bacon, brown sauce and bacon. I'm told they can also
be used for mayo, cheese and Marmite but that's The Dark Side.
Bisonburger is a portmanteau of bison and burger but I expect you got
that one as you people invented beefburger and hamburgers and all the
rest of those deliciousnesses.
I'm off to eat a venison handmeal in baps. Oh, and baps can be used
as a synonym for "paps" which means what you think it does in Real
English.
Sorry, I thought I owed you that transatlantic explanation.

BOTH are major misrepresentations of what it actually says.
