I have one of these external burners from OWC, limited to 50GB on BD-R
DL & 25GB on BD-R standard. No mention of BDXL compatibility:

In a week or so we'll know the price range of the new Mac Pro and I
assume that it will make the $150 for this widget sort of an afterthought.

A quick look around the web and I see BDXL burners from about $120 to $200.

I can put significant amounts of images on a 128 GB disk. Definitely
something to consider... (And to think I used to be happy with 100MB
iOmega Zip disks...)

Only YOU would spend $45 per disc plus the cost of the burner when a 128GB
flash drive is about the same price as a single disc and a SSD runs around a
hundred bucks. But go ahead and knock yourself out so you can brag about
being on 'the cutting edge', LOL!!!

I still us a CD-RW when taking documents to the print company - mainly
because the discs are bigger than a flash drive, so less easy for them
to lose. The discs are also cheaper if they do lose or damage them.

About thirty cents vs. forty-five bucks. I would not compare a 0.7GB CD with
a 128GB flash drive. If your Printer loses your flash drive, you need to
change the company that you are outsourcing your work.

I've never had any print files that even remotely filled a CD - a 128GB
flash drive would be over-kill (even a "lowly" 2GB one would be
virtually empty). :-)

You need to consider all the widgets you will need to buy separately.
Such as the box with disk drives in them, the disk drives, cable to
connect, optical disk device etc etc.

If you currectly have toslink cables to macpro, it is likely you will
need to buy an adaptor to fit the latop style connector instead of
standard TOSlink connectors (or change cable if you do not wish to have
light losses through the adaptor)

So you need to do the full math of what it will cost to upgrade from
current macpro to the new one. The additional costs may not be so small.

If I were to get a MP then I would need:

- a display - big fat one. ($700 - $1000) - Thunderwidget compatible.

- and I'd keep my small 1600x900 side display (for e-mail, calendars and
so on). (Or use this iMac as a display).

- adaptor for Firewire (got that) - that connect to the #1 main external
storage that I already have.

- adaptor for DVI (got that too)

And that's it. And yes, I'd probably go for the DVD burner mentioned.

And in time I'd add some Thunderbolt disk drive cabinets - but no rush.

The big item there would really be the display.

You'll also need to buy the "matching" D-Link N600 Cloud Router. ;-)

while the N600 router isn't affected by this backdoor, I don't trust a
company that let's Joel put in a backdoor into their product.

I was really just joking based on the shape of it, rather than any kind
of recommendation of the model. Personally I'd never buy nor use a
D-Link product anyway. Previous experience with one of their modems
(and two replacements) at one place I worked proved that they're
incredibly buggy and unreliable, although that was a few years ago now.

One person I help with their home computer did buy a broadband modem
(I'm not sure which make, some weird Asian brand cheapo one) and had
all sorts of problems with the data cap being used up and according to
the internet provider technician it was apparently being done via
someone else accessing the modem, and NOT wirelessly. They swapped it
for a more normal brand modem and have had no problems since.

I have a D-Link WiFi router and no issues with it. After installing the
new iMac I did have trouble with usenet connections not being made.
After trying many things I finally tried rebooting the router and that
sorted it out - though I have no idea why the router was the issue...

Ahh, the good old trick of not bothering to actually plug things in so
there are no cables cluttering up the view.

Ah, the good old trick of it being plugged-in in back.

I would expect they tailor the length of the cable so as to not clutter
the desk - as such the cable could easily be out of sight.

OTOH, the image shown is most likely a computer rendering and there
isn't even a cable in the CAD file to begin with...
