Yeah, I was gonna say, I downloaded the source code to QuickDraw and
MacPaint years ago.

That is one of the reasons I don't "tweet", but I "toot" a lot, my wife
tells me...

BTW: Just WHEN did the 'pound' symbol become "hashtag", or "hash-tag"?!?

Having been educated in metric, I didn't know until I traveled to San
Francisco that the tic tac toe sign was called "pound" in the USA :-)

To me , a pound was £ not #

(in french, # is called "dièse" and that is what I knew it as).

So, I get to this office whose door is protected by a keypad. So I am
told to punch in 1 2 3 4 followed by the pound sign. I had to ask "what
is the pound sign?" The folks at other end probably couldn't believe I
didn't know what it was :-)

It's also called the "number sign". It's called "pound" because it is used
to indicate a number, as in "a #2 pencil".)

In the UK, the symbol has been called the "hash", but is rarely used.

Speaking as a Brit, the same applies here.

DEC's VT100 terminals had a setting where you could choose Ł or # for
shift+3.

Various printers had one or the other, which made a mess of printouts
where # or Ł were used for format strings.

From the OS X Dictionary (OED, US version):

"ORIGIN 1980s: probably from hatch, altered by folk etymology.
usage: The symbol #, called hash in British English, has different
names, some of them potentially confusing. In the US, it is referred to
as either the number sign (when used in contexts such as question #2) or
the pound sign (when used as a symbol for pounds of weight: 2# of
sugar). The technical name for it is the octothorp."

The # symbol has a few different names, one of the more common ones has
always been the hash symbol.

By a strange coincedence, on Australian keyboards the # symbol is
obtained by pressing Shift 3, while the £ (UK pound sterling) symbol is
obtained by pressing Option 3.

Same thing on US keyboards, but I assume that you already knew that.
