#69088 — What's the negative effect of changing the Time Zone?

FromSage <sage@mail.invalid>
Date2015-01-27 04:39 +0000
SubjectWhat's the negative effect of changing the Time Zone?
Message-ID<ma74pu$ste$1@solani.org>
A different thread got me wondering how to bring down my
unique panopticlick ratio, by judicious setting improvements.

My "Time Zone" has almost 7 bits of identifying information.

Related questions to lowering the TZ bits:
1. Which time zone is the most common, world wide?
2. Can the time zone be changed automatically (to accomplish that)?
3. Are there any negative consequences of frequent time zone changes?

I would envision that the "most common" time zone fluctuates
throughout the day, so, that's why a script may be necessary.

Note: I don't do calendaring or alarms on my computer (I do that
on my phone).

Which way are you facing?

Yes. When you relocate, it's the new time, when you get there.

UPS has a hard time getting packages to you.

I wonder if he has any idea how big the Eastern time zone is, and how
many different nations are in it. Or the Central time zone.

Now, in Newfoundland, there are only 4 people connected to the Internet,
so if you're TZ is listed as Newfoundland Standard Time, you're probably
one of them, and the GCHQ know all about you and your spanking videos.

Oops. Someone here will shirley rave about "you're" vs "your". My
mistake (my thoughts were elsewhere). Time to star in my own spanking
video. Hmm. In Gnus, I could probably create a pre-send routine to flag
all the "your" and "you're" instances and ask "is that what you meant?"

They paid well, but, those fingerprints on my butt cheeks

I haven't read the thread about panopticlick. Do I need to know what
that is to make sense of your questions?

All of China is in a single time zone, despite its enormous size. So
that's probably the most common.

Jet lag?

Huh? Why would time zone fluctuate?

he thinks that spoofing the time zone will make him more anonymous.

LOL. I don't know about other newsreaders, but mine shows the time of
messages in my own timezone, not the sender's. So changing your timezone
would have no impact, unless I went to the trouble of checking the
original header.

He's talking about trying surf the Web anonymously with JS enabled
(hopeless). One of the many things a site can learn about your machine
via script is your time zone.

Being anonymous on Usenet is trivial.

Since the problem only manifests itself in the browser, I like the
idea of setting the time zone ONLY in the browser.

Yet, that syntax doesn't seem to work.
$ firefox -TZ=UTC -url panopticlick.eff.org &

Neither does this syntax:
$ TZ=Japan firefox -url panopticlick.eff.org &

Googling for the syntax to tell Firefox what time zone to use,
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Time_and_time_zone_settings

I went to Firefox:Tools>Web Development, and pasted in:
Date()
= "Tue Jan 27 2015 09:46:18 GMT-0800 (PST)"

I then checked the time zone in Firefox by pasting in:
(new Date).toUTCString()
= "Tue, 27 Jan 2015 17:48:00 GMT"

But, it's clear, that, if Firefox can set the TZ for
the browser, that the syntax is obscure.

Wow, I TOTALLY missed the context of this. I tried looking at a few of
the recent messages in the other thread, I didn't see anything about
anonymous web surfing there, either.

But I guess that's to be expected when the thread is triggered by a
troll. I'll just go away.

Because he's a looney, tin-foil hat wearing, certifiable, nutcase who
believes "they" are spying on him and wants to try to make himself more
anonymous and more difficult to track ... all complete and utter idiocy
and pointless stupidity.

Or, he just wants to be less trackable on the net.

Why? Think about it for a minute. What would you gain even if you
succeeded? (Which you are not going to do as long as you leave JS
enabled).

While I would love to disable Javascript, even the Tor Browser Bundle
was forced to enable Javascript, for all the reasons you already know.

Of course, TBB ships with NoScript already installed.

Ah, Tor, for the illusion of anonymity.
