SubjectMBP won't wake up
Message-ID<HdWdnbw4bpItRvzInZ2dnUU7-VmdnZ2d@earthlink.com>
Mid 2013 MBP running 10.8.5 for about the last 6-8 weeks every once in a
while, it won't wake up from sleep. Try to wake it up and no response. I
have to turn it off and turn it back on. I am running monitor and
Internet through the thunderbolt, my external HD is run from one USB
port (that is a partitioned 2 TB with half SuperDuper! back up and the
other half Time Machine. The other USB port has a non-powered hub that
runs the receiver for the keyboard/mouse, a thumb drive, and iMic for
recording and my printer. None of this has changed over the last few
weeks since the wake up has caused problems.
The non-wake up appears almost random. Sometimes I will go for 3-4
days with no problem, then sometimes closer together. It has happened
after sleeping over night and then after sleeping only a couple of
hours. Of course it has also woken up fine after overnight.
I have looked through the Apple forums and the logs but have only
come away even more confused. Any suggestions? I mostly use Word which
I save every minute anyway so losing data isn't all that much of a
problem. But I was wondering if shutting it down using the on/off switch
instead of the shut down command could cause software and/or hardware
problems.

"just works" has been replaced with, "always broke".

Can't help you with your primary issue.

So... if your 2 TB hard disk goes Tango Uniform you lose both backups?

Does your MBP wake up fine when not connected to a external display?
Is your display a Apple Thunderbolt Display?
If neither, I have no idea.
If so, start with a google for "thunderbolt display wake up problem"
and refine it to what you want.
My wake on sleep problem was solved by using a thunderbolt cable
directly plugged into my Mac Mini and then into the TBD thunderbolt
slot and letting the supplied thunderbolt cable with security dongle
just lay uselessly off the display. I obtained that solution somewhere
on the Apple Forums a year or so ago.

Don't know as I always use the external display. Need to for sight
reasons. Is this something that I could check for by just disconnecting
the display before letting it fall asleep and then plugging in again.

> Is your display a Apple Thunderbolt Display?
No, it DVI using Apple's converter.

Also, this is a relatively new development over the last 3-4 months or
so. Worked fine for the previous ~2 years.

try connecting the keyboard/mouse combo to the monitor (or provide the
hub with power)

That tells me it's failing hardware. If it's under AppleCare, then get
it fixed or at least diagnosed at the Apple Store. If it's not, then
you'll have to wait for it to fail outright. I'll bet disconnecting USB
or Thunderbold devices will change _something_. If not, it truely is
failing.

Get good backups.

Now.

I h ave replaced the TB->DMI converter multiple times. I wonder if
that is going out again. Hasn't happened again, so maybe the fix was
calling attention to it. (grin).

Between TM, SD, Carbonite and the really mission-critical stuff to a
thumbdrive, I think I'm covered in a belt AND suspenders way.

Don't put your computer to sleep. Both my MBP and MacPro are either on
or off. They never sleep.

But the only thing I can think of is there's an extension or startup
program that's running that's not well behaved that's preventing your
keyboard from sending interrupts.

The next time the "can't wake from sleep" happens, try disconnecting
your keyboard and reconnecting it. If that doesn't work, try a
non-critical disk. If nothing happens, your machine is truly frozen and
I suspect an intermittent hardware problem with the Logic board. If it's
under AppleCare warrantee, take it into an Apple Store and see if they
can run some sort of diagnostics with it.

If it's not under warrantee, it's your call on if this is annoying
enough to spend $$$ on a new logic board or live with it until it fails
outright, then get it fixed.

All our Macs (iMac, 2 MBA's) sleep nightly from 23:30 or when not in use
for 2 hours. They are rarely "off". Typically my SO's MBA goes 60 days
or more between re-boots. My iMac about 30 days and my MBA too.

How would he do that with an MBP?

It's not necessarily a hardware issue.

just read the original post, especially the part about what is connected
to a non-powered USB hub, and you'll know.

Try starting with nothing plugged in, open console, plug stuff in and see what messages pop up. Or look at what time the problem occurred and then look in the system log with Console to see if anything had problems at the same time. That might help narrow down the problem- good luck
