"Revert" ? Got something against "respond" or "reply" ?

How can you judge communication skills when yours are so poor?

And how can you offer to find good technical candidates when you don't
understand how much many of us hate spammers?

Complaints will no doubt be ignored by google & google (Groups & GMail)
but sent anyway.

"Revert" in that context is a somewhat obscure and possibly outdated
usage, which also baffled me when I heard one of my older friends using
it (New Zealand English is his first language, but he has spent a fair
amount of time working in international circles).

It might be more common in British English than Australian, New Zealand
and American English. The closest meaning listed in my (British)
dictionary is "return".

I don't recognize that usage in British English (disclaimer: I've spent a
lot of time working in international circles and have lived outside the
UK for most of my career).

OK, the British connection was just a theory without evidence. Another
possible theory is that it could be used by English speakers around
South-East Asia, as my friend who used "revert" in the same sense spent
a fair amount of time in that part of the world.

Indian "English" is famous for being old fashioned and influenced from
19th century style. Add some drift to that over 100 years and you get
today's quaint version.

Now, Wes, you're expecting a spammer who's probably spoofing the org's

Sadly what we have here is an "India" based spammer. That's how the
majority of them speak english. I say this being someone who works
pretty extensively with off-shore based companies and after hundreds of
them say revert when they mean reply you get a feel for their
"language" skills as they call it =)

Do you speak Hindi/Urdu as well as they do?

Why is it that so many English speakers in particular assume that the
entire world should speak their language? Perhaps native Anglophones
are the ones lacking "language" skills.

If they want to deal with me or mine, they can damned well do it in
English. I don't pretend to offer support in Urdi or Hindu or French.

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English
will be the official language of the European Union rather than German,
which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that
English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5-
year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will
make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in
favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have
one less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the
troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like
fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted
to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.
Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have
always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the
horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and it should
go away.

By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th"
with "z" and "w" with "v".

With the caveat that the Germans I come across tend to be those with a

rarely hear the thick English accents portrayed by Hollywood.

In my travels to Germany, Austria and Switzerland I hear the entire
spectrum of Germans speaking English. From barely comprehensible to
easy to mistake for a Brit, and in the middle somewhere is the Hollywood
version - almost.

(One client, who I'll call "Wolfgang" (because it's his real name) has
pretty clear English with an accent, but when he's irritated over a
delay or spec/contract non-compliance he goes quite Hollywood inspiring.)

I also hear an incredibly wide range of accents from Germans speaking
English. The embarrassing part is that even the worst of them are
probably better than my accent speaking German!

It's quite amusing to see Germans baffled by Swiss German and switching
to English instead. That also applies to quite a few Swiss French
speakers: they do study German at school, but it's High German they
learn. Last year I lunched in an army canteen and ended up translating
for some new recruits who were trying to get across the language barrier.

I've got to the stage where bad German hurts my ears, but when I first
tried German I got frustrated by getting an answer in perfect English :-)

I gave a presentation in Germany that had simultaneous translation from
German to French and vice versa depending on the speaker. The program
(Tiger helicopter (PAH-2)) was a French/German program so this official
meeting had to be in those languages (though much of the system spec was
in English). My boss of the day was also there and only understood English.

So I present in French and the Germans listened to the translation.

I opened by saying "My French is very Quebecois, so when translated to
German it may sound Swiss."

The French in the room all burst out laughing.

Then a delay (translation).

Then the Germans all burst out laughing.

Except my boss of course. He just sat there with that "What the hell
