Never heard of either of 'em, sorry.

Even Beats is familiar to this old guy. You'd have to have not been in a
stereo store, or Apple Store, or big box store to have not seen some
Beats product or other.

So you're probably not very with current products and their
manufacturers.

Have you been living under a rock for the past two decades?

The term is usually used for mega-retailers like Wal-Mart and Target.
Wikipedia says that it's also used for specialty superstores like Best
Buy.

I replaced my Quad amp last year. I have a pair of IMF Professional
Monitor III purchased in 1974. I suspect the x-overs may need to be
recapped, but it's hard to judge (perhaps the freq. response of my ears
has something to do with it) or maybe the optical sound output from the
Panasonic TV or the D/A converter is crap.

Meanwhile I'm pondering how best to sell the Thorens TD125 turntable,
and SME 3009 with Shure V15 cartridge (all unused for 20 years).

I don't think we have any of these (well there is Asda, owned by
Wal-Mart, but that's just a supermarket).

If you're talking about "big box" in the sense of a big store shifting
lots of TVs in boxes, I'd be better off doing some research, then going
to e.g. John Lewis to see the TVs all set up and being sold by someone
who has at least some idea of what they're talking about. I might then
buy from them or perhaps from Amazon.

How parochial are you? Do you only know about things that are in your
backyard? You don't watch or read news? Wal-Mart is the world's biggest
retailer, they have the largest workforce outside the government.
They're in the news frequently. Businesses like this are the reason many
mom-n-pop stores are struggling to compete, and even many once-big
retailers like Woolworth have gone out of business.

I think I've only been to Wal-Mart once or twice, and never to CostCo
(there doesn't seem to be much point in buying in bulk when you live
alone). But I surely know they exist and they have huge impact on the
economy.

I believe the term "big box" just refers to the fact that these are
usually big, standalone buildings -- the store itself is a big box.

<snip>

Yep. It's difficult in many bigger towns and cities to find a store
that isn't part of a large chain, often owned by the same parent
company. Most of the shopping malls are all filled with the same old
big name stores. :-(

In Australia / New Zealand there two main budget-sell-everything type
cahins - Kmart (which licenses the name from the US, but is an
unrealated company) and The Warehouse (often called Red Shed in New
Zealand, but they bought up an Australian company which has yellow
stores - I can't recall the name now).

Woolworths still exists in Australia as a supermarket chain, but the
New Zealand branches of Woolworths and Foodtown have all been rebranded
as Countdown after a buyout a few years ago ... although they still use
the peeled tomato "W" logo which Apple tried to stop Woolworths using.

Why should I read any news about a foreign company like Wal-Mart?
Except perhaps when they take over one of our supermarket chains.

As for size, I'm sure I read somewhere that the NHS is the biggest
employer anywhere except the Chinese Red Army.

No, quite rarely.

Since there are none of either here it's unsurprising that I've been to
neither.

Didn't realize you were not American. Never mind.

ASDA is not just a supermarket. They sell clothing, toys, and weirdly,
financial services as well as food.

Wal-Mart is an international company with a presence in over 25
countries. They are the world's largest corporation and the largest
non-governmental employer. They are also one of the proofs positive that
vast sums of money turns people into evil soul sucking scum.

Those are both government employers. Walmart employs over 2 million
people.

So does Tesco. And so?

<yawn> again, I'm afraid. AFAIAC, it's a foreign company about which I
don't give a monkey's and in which I have not the slightest interest.

You said Asda was "just a supermarket"

Your foreignness probably also explains not recognizing the term
"big-box store". It's probably an American idiom. Even in other
countries that have similar (or the same) stores, they probably don't
use the same term for them.

Most places don't have enough different brands to give them an overall
them. I did see the term "hypermarket" used to describe them when I was
reading something online today.

I don't consider myself as living under a rock. Although I do not watch
TV so admittedly I don't see TV commercials unless they are really good
and someone pointto them on Youtube.

I frequent the Apple places of worship a few times a year. I have have
seen "beats" stuff, but never noticed them. I have noticed some younger
folks parade around the town with 1970s headphones connected to their
iphone. I notice them because they stand out as different (aka: not
widespread use).

Before this story of Apple buying Beats, I was totally unaware of that
company's existence.

Perhaps in the USA it is more of a cultural phenomenon, but outside the
USA, i have to wonder. Recall that Apple makes more than half its
profits from outside the USA.

I think 3 billion bucks is way overvalued for that company.

I read somewhere that Vivendi has shares in the company. (some some form
of association). Perhaps paying a hefty premium for a worthless company
was a way to get favours from the shareholders. And I am hoping those
favours are worth 3 billion bucks.

Yep, there's a couple of articles on MacRumors.com about it. I haven't
had time to read them fuly yet, but a VERY quick skim seems to say it's
at least partly for the subscription service.

If that is the point, why not just buy Spotify or Pandora or one of the
other market leading sevices? Apple could have them for what would be
chump change out of the savings account.

Thos bigger names would be more expensive to buy, but I did say the
subscription was probably only PART of the reason. They've also
"gained" the two big-headed fool... err, "music industry geniuses"
behind Beats.
