Will these work with my new(to me) 20" iMac? They are USB, probably USB
1.0. I did not order the keyboard/mouse that came as optional with the
refurbed iMac. I think that it should work, but I still have computers
with PS/2 ports!

Thanks, I was hoping it would be OK!

Any USB mouse and keyboard should be fine.

Thanks, JR. My old Apple keyboard, which started out white, is now
yellow! It is the one with two USB take-off on the top, the original one
that came with my 2002 iMac.
Another question: Is there any worth/market for one of the those chrome
necked, swivel monitor models? I have so limited room, that I cannot
keep a lot of "toys" around anymore? Also, would any of my apps that I
bought over the years, like Thoth, SuperDuper transfer to the Intel iMac,
or are they only PPC?

all are intel native but you might have trouble getting the intel thoth.

Yeah, pretty much figured that Thoth was toast! The author is "off the
grid" and the app has not been updated in a long time.
Will just have to look for another NNTP client for this new iMac.

Check eBay, Craigslist, etc. Because of that design, they are still
quite popular.

> Also, would any of my apps that I bought over the years, like Thoth,

That depends on the applications themselves and the which version of
Mac OS X you're running.

Some applications created over the transition period are "universal
binaries - they contain both PPC and Intel code, so work on Macs with
either chip type.

Apple stopped supporting PPC code in Mac OS X 10.7 ("Lion") - versions
of OS X from that onwards do not have the Rosetta software to
"translate" the PPC code on the fly, so PPC applications cannot be run.

You can use a PPC emulator like SheepShaver to run an older OS and
possibly still use those applications. I'm not sure what the highest
version of Mac OS that Sheepshaver itself can run though.

Well that was 13 years ago... : ) The current aluminum Apple keyboards
are *much* nicer, IMO.

Yep, most Macs have good resale values. Though since it's PowerPC G4
based and over a decade old, it's not going to have the same value as
something newer - or even something much older:

Many have been updated to support Intel Macs. SuperDuper certainly has.
No idea about Thoth in particular.

They will work.

The mouse should be fine, apart from missing the second button
(Control-click achieves that) and scrolling features which are now
standard on more recent mice.

The keyboard will be fine apart from one issue: it doesn't have the
special functions on the numbered F-keys, e.g. for controlling screen
brightness, volume and media playback. Your old keyboard may have
separate volume control buttons.

A free applciation Karabiner can assign special functions to the
numbered F-keys.

Screen brightness can also be controlled via a slider in System
Preferences > Display.

Media controls for iTunes are available in its various user interfaces,
and if you are running Yosemite, iTunes 12 also has a Notification
Centre widget with media controls.

The other two missing function keys are F3 (Mission Control) and F4
(Dashboard or Launchpad, depending on which keyboard variant you have).
Most of those can be configured via System Preferences > Mission
Control.

Personally, I've never bothered with Launchpad, so I use Karabiner to
reassign the F4 key to Dashboard (which I'm gradually phasing out in
favour of Notification Centre).

Thank you David. It is the original keyboard from my 2002 iMac. Also,
will the round, digital audio speakers work with the new iMac? Is there
a digital audio output?

The Apple Pro Speakers were only support by desktop Mac models around
2001 to 2004: PowerMac G4 (Digital Audio) and later PowerMac G4 models,
and all iMac G4 models. I can't see any mention of support on the
PowerMac G5 or iMac G5, let alone Intel Macs.

I seem to recall mention of a third party interface gadget to let you
connect them to anything else, but I've never gone looking for one as I
didn't have those speakers.

That was a Firewire adapter. I had one, it worked well.

Karabiner is a *brilliant* program that can do just about anything having to do
with your keyboard, trackpad, or mouse. I've used it for a long time on my
laptops to switch the Fn and Ctrl keys and to set the right option key to
"Enter", for example, but it can do much more than that. I heartily recommend
it.

Does it? Say, so it does! Heh, never noticed that was there.

Oh right, I also use Karabiner to disable the Launchpad button.

Yeah, I stopped using Dashboard a while ago. Surprised it was left in to 10.8,
much less still around in 10.10.
