That's the *camera* app, not the photo app!

*Much* experimentation??? I discovered that the first time I used it

Tapping that button turns on the filters. Tapping the button again turns
them off. That's about as simple as anything in life gets.

actually they do, and fairly frequently.

when itunes moved the traffic light buttons, users bitched, and then
apple relented and changed it back.

when the translucent menu bar came out, users bitched, then apple added
a toggle to change it back to normal so it's readable.

pinstripes were strong in early versions of os x and later toned down
in successive releases. the dock keeps changing. command-doubleclicking
a url changed and changed again. command key equivalents in apps change
for no reason, such as reveal item in itunes and view source in safari.

most of the time when apple makes a change, they add a secret hidden
pref because they know that they're really just guessing.

their mistakes also extend to product design. the puck mouse was a
disaster, with countless clip-on accessories to make it usable. the 3rd
gen ipod shuffle was a dud (which they admitted) and apple had to
return to the 2nd gen design. the original macbook air had only 1 usb
port which turned out to be a problem, so now it has 2.

remember, they don't do focus group testing. it's whatever steve
wanted, and now what jony ive wants. they aren't (weren't) perfect and
they *do* make mistakes.

I said that they do make mistakes, but I also said that they rarely
make ones that they have to go back on. Your examples do not

selective memory.

there are numerous instances of where they reverse what they did. those
were just the ones that came to mind.

There are some, but not numerous. Of course those terms are nebulous,
so there's really no way to determine which of us is right.

Frankly, I don't particularly care for the new flattened icons in
Yosemite, but I don't find them objectionable, nor a reason not to use
Yosemite.

I do like the theory they did that intentionally to jump start the USB
accessary market. If everyone had to replace their iMac mouse,
companies would suddenly see profit in making mice which were not yet
useable on the Windows side (but would be once USB became more standard
there)

Unfortunately, the same isn't happening with regard to bluetooth. The
only two bluetooth extended keyboards I can find are crap, all the
wireless options requiring a USB dongle. Why can't Apple make a
non-wired version of their extended keyboard?

they didn't make the puck mouse to jump start the usb market. they
really thought it was a good idea. well steve did, anyway. the rest of
the world didn't.

there are claims that the imac jump started usb, but that is completely
bogus. usb would have succeeded just as much if apple didn't make the
imac.

they did.

apple's first bluetooth keyboard was an extended keyboard with the same
design as their pro keyboard, just without wires.

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Apple_Keyboard_A1016_Russian.jpg>

the problem is that people who want wireless keyboards generally do not
want huge keyboards. they want smaller ones that are portable, which is
why their current bluetooth keyboard is not extended.

Yet there are tons of USB wireless full keyboards. So, there IS a
market, but not a bluetooth one. That's what I'm trying to figure out.
All I can think of is not enough Windows computers come with bluetooth
for companies that don't target Macs to bother. (Even Logictech sells a
wireless USB full keyboard which mirrors Apple's wired one, yet no
bluetooth)

Just in case you haven't seen this -

http://kbtalkingusa.com

But, they now say they're sold out, until the next batch comes along.
And, the keypad is one key short of ANSI happiness. Long ago I asked
about that -

| other than the existing layout, we cannot customize the keys to
| something different due to how these keyboards are manufactured.

They also said -

| Mac keycaps are included. All you need to do is use the keycap puller
| to pull up the std ones and put the mac ones there. And just make sure
| to enter Mac mode (Fn+Mac/iOS key) once and it will remain in that mode
| until you change it to another mode, if ever.

Cherry keyswitches are reasonably decent, by the way.

what's to figure out?

apple makes a non-extended bluetooth keyboard that sells better than
their older extended bluetooth keyboard.

for those who still want extended keyboards, they can buy a third party
one or find apple's old used wireless keyboard.

> All I can think of is not enough Windows computers come with bluetooth

there's nothing mac specific about a bluetooth keyboard. it's a
standard human interface device (hid) and works on any system that
supports the hid profile, which includes computers and smartphones.

if a system lacks bluetooth (what kind of crap system doesn't have
bluetooth?), then a bluetooth dongle can be added for very little
money.

exactly.

bluetooth keyboards make sense for small portable keyboards,
particularly because they can connect to tablets and smartphones.

they do not make sense for using at a desk. might as well just use a
cable and not have to deal with the battery hassles, latencies and
potential wifi interference.

A keyboard unwired is not as handy as a mouse unwired. My keyboard
sits on a desk and seems happy enough, its tail going back under the
monitor. It did try once to escape, a few years back, I sat down to
find out what was making it so unhappy? It turned out that I don't eat
at the desk and it is jealous of its mates who have owners dropping
them crumbs. I promised to fix it, this is the deal I offered, if it
tries to escape again, I will get an axe and silence its cheeky
big-mouth.

It depends. In my last abode I found a wireless keyboard very handy
because I could easily put it on one side when not in use. That's not an
issue with my current setup so a wired keyboard is fine.

there are keyboards with the cable coming out the back which will not
interfere with putting the keyboard on its side.

or, just get a usb 'l' connector.

I bought my wireless keyboard in late February; I paired it once, and
haven't had to pair it again, even after turning it off and on, or
turning the computer off and on. I haven't had to recharge the
batteries yet; it uses two AA batteries.

Not much farting around.
