The design choice made by Apple on UI are "religious" in nature and Apple doesn't go back on decisions. At best, they will tone down the UI design change. Case in point: on IOS 7, they made a gratuitous animation to show in which direstion to slide to unlock iPhone. At any one point in time , only a tiny portion of "slide to unlock" is visible, with the rest in no-contrast colour. The proper fix would have been to do the opposite and have the text visible by default, and only "slide" a small portion to make it unreadable. this could still convey the sense of movement/direction, while making the message readable. But now, with 7.1 all Apple did was change the colours a bit to make the UI error less bad. And this is what Apple is all about in UI. They rarely go back on a UI decision. And that is a problem because of of a design that puts more priority on museum-style design choices over basic usability that is less marketable because it doesn't look as cool in the demo.

It is absolutely the case that Apple continually refines its user interfaces. A simple web search shows lots of examples of Apple going back on user interface design decisions. One bright and shining example is how the Address Book application looked like a physical address book, and now no longer looks that way. You're lying, and doing a horrible job at it. > At best, they will tone down the UI design change. Either don't know the correct definition of "refined", or you're lying in an attempt to make a point. Either way, you lose; try again. > And this is what Apple is all about in UI. They don't intend to downgrage the UI, they really think they are improving it. But they are improving it only for the keynote demo, not for everyday life. Here is another example: For the photo app, they added the useless "filters". In bright sunshine, the iPhone is hard enough to read to begin with, but if you accidentally press the "filters" icon, it really isn't obvious how you can get out of there. There is no big cancel button. There isn't an "on off" button for filters. You really need to read the tiny text to find outr the filter called "none". I was in washingtton, and I swear, I couldn't see how to turn off filters, I had to use google to find out that it is the middle image that you need to press to disable filters. Once home, i saw there was tiny text that said "none" under the middle image. This looks great during the keynote. But at the end of the day, it is bad UI design for real life use. (and the filters themselves are quite useless to begin with, so it is bad that they would be afforded such a large button next to the shutter and that there would be such a narrow band that you can slide from video/photo/pano etc. I often find myself switching modes by mistake, and that square option should be something one could disable if you don't use Facebook or whatever those square images are for. IVE may be good at making things LOOK good, but I don't think he knows how to make this really usable in many situations. (a bit like the SD card and USB ports on new imacs).

I have never see/used filters before on the photo or other app. The only one I saw was in the twitter app that lets you fix pictures and the filters there are very hard to activate unless you really want them. In th case of the photo app, look at the real estate afforded to flash nd HDR, and loos at how much space is given to the huge 2 colour circles. And consider that icon/button/whatever is right next to the very narow place where you lide from video/photo/square/pano AND close to the shutter. If Apple **ASSUMES** that customers know that it is the pmiddle picture to press to disable filters, then there is a really bad UI design.

There's nothing to assume or to know; all there is is to look. The center picture is the only one that doesn't show filtering effects. What is so frigging hard to figure out about that?

The only way to know is to do Google search to find out that to disable filters, you have to choose the filter called "none" that is just one of many filters amnd you can find it lost right in the middle of them. And in bright sunlight, you cannot see the tiny text below the pictures. And there is no way to turn off filters. You have to choose the "none" filter.

I am totally confused now; I can't find a Filters button anywhere in the Photo app. And it doesn't appear when viewing the camera roll in that app, but only when the camera is active. And pressing the filters button again turns off filters. So I have no idea what you're talking about. And I suspect that you don't either.

Look at the bottom right of the screen when in camera. Do you see three overlapping circles of different opacity? That's the button to enter the filters interface. If it's monochromatic, no filters are active, if it's in colour, then a filter is being applied.
