So spend US$99 and sign it yourself, or just ignore it.

System fonts, Safari color scheme, line widths and the list goes on. As it is right noe the UI is boring and flat as hell with poor contrast and all pale colorings.

apple wants it to look a certain way and does not want theming.

They wanted that last year, and the year before that... that doesn't
explain why they're changing it now, nor does it explain that these
changes will do anything positive.

What they appear to want is to draw those with iOS devices to the Mac
by making the Mac look like an iOS device.

Fine... just don't screw it up for the customers you already have.

it's part branding and part design.

some like it and some don't.

they sell roughly 10x as many ios devices as they do macs, and making
potential customers feel at home is a huge boost to sales.

One possibility is that simpler "flat" icons, etc. will make it easier
(and use up less storage and RAM) for the user interface to be changed
to resolution independent vector formats, instead of the current
bitmap-based ones.

This has nothing to do with high resolution displays, and more to do
with simple theming, which has never been directly supported by Apple.
So nothing new to see here.

Well, you ket me know when they start selling a 27" laptop... because
until they do, we won't be buying one.

Supporting retina displays is fine... tailoring your OS to them
exclusively isn't.

A keyboard unwired is not as handy as a mouse unwired. My keyboard
sits on a desk and seems happy enough, its tail going back under the
monitor. It did try once to escape, a few years back, I sat down to
find out what was making it so unhappy? It turned out that I don't eat
at the desk and it is jealous of its mates who have owners dropping
them crumbs. I promised to fix it, this is the deal I offered, if it
tries to escape again, I will get an axe and silence its cheeky
big-mouth.

At this stage the OS should handle both display types. When Apple
eventually moves it's entire product line to Retina displays *and* the
OS is no longer installable on old Macs, then Retina-only will be okay.

Rumouredly a Retina screened iMac (or possibly stand-alone display) is
coming before Christmas, but I'm not sure I'd hold my breath for the
iMac.

Of course the whole thing is getting into a bit of a confused mess with
"HD", "Retina" (at varying resolutions), "4K" and higher, and the
rather stupid "Ultra-HD" that TV manufacturers are now pushing (with no
real "Ultra-HD" content to watch on them!).

Or by not trying to pretend that OS X is OS 9. That's an option.

You are the minority. And the OS Works and looks fine on a regular screen
(which I have) but it is designed for retina.

All those people on MBPrs will appreciate it, and that's the vast

Great for people who watch keynotes... I watched one, once. Since
Jobs died, I've really had no interest in keynotes.

Yes... but a dumb option. I have a great universal remote for my home
entertainment equipment. Just because I buy a new receiver and
monitor, should I just stop using it because it's old? It's old and
discontinued, but it's still the best remote I've used in my life.

The Apple Menu was one of the great innovations in Mac OS history. OSX
was another. Telling me that I shouldn't have the best of both worlds
is rather shortsighted... I'm not clinging to old technology - I'm
clinging to GOOD technology.

Classic Menu returns a functionality that I use every single time I sit
down at my machine. Just because Apple fell in love with the Dock
(which I really have absolutely no use for) is no reason to discard one
of the really bright aspects of the old Mac OS.

With a single click, I can literally navigate to any folder or file in
any of the 9 volumes on my system, and related network. Tell me why I
should give that up?

Someone replied here that it was... I was merely responding to that
assertion. I have no idea if it actually was.

I was in the minority back in the early 90's too. That's when Apple
was on it's last 6 months worth of operating capital. They turned it
around, and created one of the greatest comebacks in business history.

It still doesn't make sense to change things unless you're going to
make them better. Text that's harder to read is not making things
better. I don't care who they're catering to... bad decisions are bad.
 Period. End of story.

Yes, yes you are. You're also clinging to outdated use cases. Stuck in
the past isn't the best place to be, IMO.

That's ridiculous. My everyday OS is Mavericks. I have a Mac Pro
Tower, as well as a laptop. I own 2 iPads, one full sized, and a
retina mini. I'm on a fiber optic network. I have 2 iPods. I own over
600 blu-rays. I print my projects on a $17,000 Epson proofing system
(admittedly, at work).

And you're saying I'm clinging to old technology and stuck in the past
because I use something like Classic menu, which is light years ahead
of the dick, sorry... dock, in terms of functionality? I think I've
kept up quite nicely in terms of technology, thank you.

BTW... what are use cases?

You can do that pretty well with the Dock as well you know...

You know what *I* know, now do you?

Then you'd know that I use Dragthing in my workflow, which puts a
series of popup drawers on the bottom edge of the screen, as well as
along the right and, sometimes, left side of my screen. The dock takes
up real estate I'd rather use for something else. The Apple menu
doesn't take up any real estate.

But then, you knew that was what I was doing, right?

I know what a common figure of speech is...

None of that changes what the Dock can DO, now does it?

>
> But then, you knew that was what I was doing, right?

I had (and in fact still have) no reason to know.

Your contention was (as phrased by YOU) that the Apple menu was
necessary because it could let you look at all your drives in a
hierarchical menu.

Well guess what, sunshine: the Dock can DO that! I do it all the time
with permanent dock "folders" for hard drives and network shares.
