Well, it is a problem when you have so much it won't fit in the piggy
bank. :-)

BBC article on Apple's most recent financials..
http://www.bbc.com/news/business-32490926

PC market contracts by 7%, Mac sales grow by "double digits". (so 10%)

of note:

Apple's sales in China now surpass those of the USA.

http://investor.apple.com/
Look for Q2 FY2015 Earnings Release

Press Release:

in USA : the "Discover" card will join Apple Pay in the fall.
Tim Cook named a number of US merchants joining Apple Pay. Including
Best Buy.

Apple building 2 large datacentres, Ireland and Dennmark. Will run 100%
on renewable energy.

By late June, Apple may be in a position to expand Apple Watch to more
countries. Cook speaks of Apple learning about customer preferences, in
some cases Apple had guessed right and in others it is adjusting. Cook
notes that this product has more variations than other products.

Apple has executed $112 billion of the $130 billion share buyback. The
program, which was to end this year, is raised to $200 billion, by mid
2017. (so 88 billion left in share buying between now and end of 2017)

Additional:

iPad not doing so well. Some cannibalisation coming from the bigger
iPhone and from the new light Mac.

Apple looking forward to its IBM partnership opening new enterprise
markets for the iPad.

BTW, of the $193 billion in cash, 171 billion is outside of the USA. So
the share repurchase programme continues to be funded by Apple borrowing
money.

Not sure if I mentioned it. Apple Watch has lower profit margin than the
average fr Apple products. (so it will drive corporate profit margins down)

BTW, Apple's money problems are so bad, they've been forced to increase
the dividend from $0.47 to $0.52 per share :-) There are fears this
could cause some serious inflation on the price of AAPL shares. terrible
problem, isn't ? :-)

By "the new light Mac" I assume you mean the 12-inch MacBook? It hadn't
even been released in the quarter ending March 2015, so it doesn't
factor in any net sales. Its only influence on iPad sales in that
quarter would be people delaying purchase until they decide which device
to buy.

This is like saying somebody has no pulse, as long as you measure the
heart rate only when it isn't pumping.

Other newer shinier shit is in higher demand, because practically
everybody who wants the new iPad probably bought it already and there's
newer shinier stuff to be had now. But, when Apple releases another
new iPad it will sell, like always, much better than the stale
predecessor did as it was on its way out.

I'd have thought that the magical tech analysts would have learned this
by now but their outlooks, while predictable, are usually much more
alarmist than they should be. In a sane world I wouldn't want Chicken
Little advising my portfolio manager but the lunatics are running the
asylum.

Meanwhile, Windows 8 and 8.1 combined still have a smaller user base
than Windows XP, even if you count every Windows 7 "downgrade" as a
technical Windows 8 sale (MS does!) but these same tech analysts are
very happy about every bumbling error that MS committs. Even while MS
fails hard, the analysts are eager to interpret the failure as success.

nope. the ipad sold 12 million units, which is still a shitload.

false. a significant number of ipad buyers are first time ipad owners,
which means quite a few people have not already bought one.

that's true of anything. everyone wants the latest and greatest.
whether they go out and buy one depends on various things.

regarding ipad sales, many people are instead choosing the larger
iphone 6/6+ and/or a macbook air and there's nothing wrong with that.

Tell that to Tim Cook. If you listen to the teleconference call, he
discusses the poor performance of iPad. (and by poor performance, we're
only talking about sales changes, not about profits).

Cook did not break down whcih iPad is being hurt. For instance iPad Mini
is more likely to be cannibalized by the iPhone 6 Plus, then the bigger
iPad would be by a Laptop.

Most of the "problem", I think, is that there's no reason to replace an
iPad. I have the original mini, and will keep it until the day it dies.
There's no incentive to buy a newer model.

However, during a time of a product category's life where penetration is
still low, one would assume that growth in sales would be achieved
though new customers isntead of relying on existing customers upgrading.

I just bought my third Apple product last month. I had a new 2002 iMac,
an iPod Nano, and now a 2010 iMac. I just do not like touch screens, I
have 5 laptops; two T400s, an HP 6515b, an old 486 Toshiba, a 486 Packard
Bell running DOS. I just switched from a flip phone to a smart phone two
months ago, a Moto E.

The "incentive" is the same as with a Mac, or anything else for that
matter - you want to have the latest features, run the newest software,
boast to your friends you've got the newest model, etc.

Whether those are an incentive yo you personally is a different matter.
I'm still using a beige PowerMac G3 on a dial-up connection because

I used OS/2 from 1993-2008, not caring about the latest and greatest
stuff, it just did what I needed it to do. I really liked that old OS!

I bought the 2 originally, and replaced it with the 3 to get the higher
resolution screen. I skipped the four, and bought the Air because of
its features, and then the Air 2 because of Touch ID and other
compatibility issues that were forthcoming. However, I can't think of
anything that the next model will have that would want to make me buy
it. That doesn't mean that Apple won't think of something, though.

Oh, no, that's not true. If you have a non-retina iPad you definitely
should upgrade.

I had a retina iPod before, and while it looks better it's not a
feature I'm going to pay another $500 for. Not when what I have does
what it needs to do.

You sell the one you have, making the upgrade a no-brainer.

When I upgraded from my iPad 2 to 3 I gave my 2 to my eldest, but I
could have sold it for $350.

Is anyone allowed to say they don't care about a feature? I still don't
have a HD TV because my old 36" TV is still going after 18 years. I
plan on treating this mini the same way. When it dies, it gets replaced
by whatever the new model is. Even the $150 your example gives is too
much for me to pay for a pretty picture.

Showing you've never used a retina device. It's not at all about a
pretty picture, it is about it being much easier to read, and for longer
periods of time.

With my iPad2, I could read for a couple of hours before my eyes started
getting tired, and if I read for more than 4 hours, I'd have a terrible
headache the next day. With my Retina iPad, I can read all day and all
night with no eyestrain.

I just replaced my original iPad with the Air 2, mainly to get the data
plan option when I travel. The original one still works great, and my
wife now uses it to play games and control iTunes.

Probably, but those figures don't have enough detail to confirm it. Net
sales for Americas was US$21.316 billion, Greater China was US$16.823
billion.

Americas includes Canada and Central/South American countries. We don't
know how much is attributable to those countries vs USA, but it would be
reasonable to assume the majority of "Americas" net sales is USA.

Greater China includes Taiwan, so it partly depends on your definition
of "China".

This quarter included Chinese New Year, which is probably a major gift
buying occasion. This could be a seasonal peak.

Apple is looking to more than double its number of retail stores in
China over the next year. If the sales trend continues, I wouldn't be
surprised to see net sales in Greater China exceeding Americas in some
quarters next year, perhaps even later this year.
