The wireless TVs still need a separate source for "normal" TV viewing.
WiFi brings in Netflix among other things. My TV can do Mac display but
only via HDMI cabling.

Networkable TVs (whether wireless or wired) still need a router to
connect to a multiple device network and a modem to connect to the
Internet. Depending on the model of TV and what add-ons you have the
TV's network functions can be used for watching online video, Skype
calls, etc. even web browsing and email in some cases, but for most
people it tends to be just another sales gimmick that is never used, a
lot like 3D and 4K (although that last one might become amore useful,
eventually).

Probably not.

You can, however, connect to your LAN and to and DNLA servers (like,
say, Plex running on another machine)

> If so, could that do extended screen space as well as mirroring?

Almost certainly not. You would be able to extend the screen via a
cable connection though and use it as a computer monitor. There are
WiFi solutions possible, but...
