I'm still on ML on both my Macs-I have a seminar to give today, and I
don't want to take any chances of any sort of glitch messing up one of
my machines. I'm using MT-Newswatcher for Usenet, but realize that
Newswatcher won't work under Mavericks. I'm looking for a free Usenet
client that is reasonable. Does anyone have any suggestions?

FWIW, I just downloaded two free clients that made the top 5 list of
Usenet clients from Allyouneedlists.com. They are SABznbd, and NNTPgrab.
Does anyone have any experience with either of them? I haven't tried
them yet, and probably wont' until tomorrow.

Thank you in advance.

Personally, I do prefer slrn within the terminal.
Otherwise, I do use Thunderbird on occasions.

Neither one of those are NNTP clients.

Yeah, I found that out too. That site doesn't seem to know what a NNTP
client is.

There has been a lengthy discussion of this on comp.sys.mac.apps which
might be useful to you.

This isn't a system question, it's an app question. And guess what --
there are several threads on the subject in comp.sys.mac.apps since
Mavericks came out and everyone discovered that MT-NW no longer works.

I know MTNW doesn't work under Mavericks. I'm asking people's opinions
on good replacements.

I know you know that -- you said it in your first paragraph.

I'm suggesting that you take a look at the threads in the other
newsgroup, where people have already been posting their opinions for a
couple of days, instead of starting a new thread in the wrong group.

Here is a list of Mac newsreaders:

<http://www.macorchard.com/usenet/>

I have no idea how up-to-date the information on that page is, however.

It's about as up-to-date as a list of Amiga newsreaders would be :)

It's OS X 10.5 era info. Used to be my favourite 'first checked every

I'm going to guess summer 2010, because that's the latest date listed
for a "current" version of any of the newsreaders listed.

Yep, it used to be a handy website, but hasn't been updated in a while.
Possibly it got over-taken by places like MacUpdate.com. It can still
be useful if you need older applications (like me looking for Mac OS X
1 and 2 applications), although you may find some links now longer
work.

Thunderbird is fine for me. I've been using it since it came out
(windows days). I have Unison (paid for) but I don't especially like it.

Some people despise TB and love Unison...

Follow up set to: comp.sys.mac.apps

Why not just stick with 10.8? It'll be supported both by Apple and third
party devs for a few more years, based on past behaviour. If nothing
else I'd avoid being an early adopter (especially on a work machine! Why
would you risk updating a work machine that's working just fine, and is
needed immediately afterwards?), but that's just me - I've been burnt by
release versions too many times.

As for those two newsreaders - never heard of them, or ever seen them in
other people's User-Agent header, and I've been on Usenet for decades
now.

I suspect very strongly that 10.8 will not be supported by developers
for any length of time at all. You will have support for 10.6.8 and
later, and 10.9 and later, pretty much only those two options.

Apple killed 10.8. They could easily drop all support for it tomorrow
since 1) 10.9 runs on every single model 10.8 runs on and 2) it's free.

They aren't newsreaders, they are downloaders for nzb files.

Ok, you just included 10.8 there ;-)

I'm doubtful of that. Apple never drops support that quickly. Third
party devs? Not all of them, unless the market share is next to nothing.

The thing about upgrading the OS is, a lot of buyers of Macs never do.
We do a lot more than Windows users who only rarely upgrade the OS of a
PC. But there's still a significant percentage of Mac users don't,
either because they're unaware of the upgrade, a need to upgrade, or
simply don't know how to and never find out.

It's important to realise that for many users their Mac is just a tool,
and they might never see a single news item on 10.9 in the non-tech news
they care to follow.

Ah.
