the apple ii is when the personal computer revolution began.

the mac changed how people interact with computers, which is also
important.

I think it's hard to say whether it was the Apple II or the TRS-80. They
were both pretty significant around the same time. The TRS-80 might have
been the game changer because Radio Shack stores were all over the
place. I don't know how common it was, but our local store allowed a
bunch of us to use it in the store. I never actually owned one of my own
(but a friend I met at the store eventually did), but I spent hours
fooling with it there (it happened to be adjacent to a Burger King that
I had an after-school job at).

The Apple II was launched in June 1977 (as was the Commodore PET,
although that was a "Professional Computer" rather than a "Personal
Computer"). The TRS-80, aka the Trash-80, wasn't released until two
momnths later in August 1977.

Thanks. Answered my previous question.

BTW, the PET's first acronym had "Personal" for the P. It is only later
that it moved to "professional".

Back then, businesses had no use for these "toys", not until Visicalc
came along of the Apple ][ and some busineses started to use this
marvelous new "spreadsheet" technology that couldn't be done on a mainframe.

I took "Professional Computer" from the label on the front in a picture
of the PET, so you could be right about a change from "Personal", but
the name change adds to the fact that it wasn't really aimed at
"normal" people.

My high school had one Commodore PET the year I started there. It was
basically just toured around classes to say "this is what a computer
looks like" and I don't think anyone actually used it for anything
properly. The only other place I've ever seen them is on old TV shows
like The Bionic Man. :-)

The next year (after some fundraising) we had a "computer room" with
about 20 Apple II computers and a "server" for the teacher - the
biggest school computer room in the country, if not the Southern
Hempisphere, at the time. They were upgraded over the next few years to
IIe models and an Apple III. Not long after I had finished high school
they added another computer room or two with DOS / Windows PCs - thank
goodness I "missed out" on those. :-)

Two months apart. Is that not "around the same time"? Did you think I

Yup! I had a Commodore 64 and an Apple ][e with duo-drives running the
original AppleWorks, WP, DB, Spreadsheet, and for fun I had the Apple
version of Microsoft Flight Simulator. I also went through a bunch of
different input devices from basic joy sticks to the Koala Pad, and a
Gibson Light Pen.

SubLOGIC originally wrote That program for other computers, the first
being the Apple ][, before it was licensed to Microsoft.

You are correct. The packaging, floppy, and manual I have are all
SubLOGIC with an MS byline. It was a great simulation at the time.

Amusing - but I'd rather see these kids reacting to living life on a
1850's farm. 1 whole year's worth. Or even a 1950's farm.

There was a series of PBS reality shows where they had modern families
try to live like they did in various primitive eras: Frontier House,
Victorian House, etc. The kids whines a lot, although the parents didn't
enjoy it much, either -- the life of a Victorian housewife was filled
with drudgery.

I'll try to find those.

There's a series of British series such as "Tales from the Green Valley"
(1620), "Edwardian Farm", "Tudor Monastery Farm" and so on. Each is 12
episodes (except for some side stories) - one for each month of the farm
annual cycle - while the cast lives on the farm (in one case they can't
sleep at the farm due to labour health laws).

Very nitty-gritty.

No children in the core production, but some on some episodes where
there are gatherings of some kind or another.

You can watch all of them on YouTube.

I found them fascinating and educational. Whether the do-or-die of a
1620 farm or the emerging technology of the 1800's, very interesting.
