While the poorly supported Mini vMac is fairly decent (emulates a Mac Plus with 9" B&W screen, that will run System 6 well IME), other 68k and PPC Mac emulation is generally crap and has been for over a decade, with appallingly little progress made. If you want to play old games I suggest finding the titles for other platforms and running them in emulation. Emulated DOS, Apple II, C64, Amiga, Atari 800, NES, SNES and many, many other platforms are all light years ahead of Mac 68k and PPC emulation. I'm a couple hundred old DOS games running great in DOSBox here. DOSBox is truly wonderful software, and with a loader like Boxer <http://boxerapp.com/> (contains it's own copy of DOSBox, so you'll only need Boxer) it's almost entirely a GUI experience :-) Though I've a bunch of old systems and consoles emulated, DOSBox takes care of 90% of my classic non-console gaming needs, as virtually every personal computer game of that era was ported to the PC at some stage. Still, nothing beats running the original Apple II Lode Runner, eh? Virtual ][ is currently top of the heap in Mac Apple II emulators. Though I still like Catakig a lot (cause I used it throughout my classic Mac years). Regards, Jamie Kahn Genet -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

Yep, Lode Runner, the proper Castle Wolfenstein, etc. The good ol' days when games were varied and actually playable ... unlike today's pile of almost solely third-person shooter rubbish using 3D graphics (which make me motion-sick after only a few minutes). :-(

Supports up to OS 9.0.4, I believe. Look up "emaculation forum", although the WordPerfectMac group is also fairly active with supporting plug-and-play packages of SheepShaver aimed at continuing to keep WordPerfect a going program, but once you have SheepShaver configured and running you can of course run almost any OS 9 (or older) PPC apps.

SheepShaver ran well enough for WordPerfect IME. But it fell apart trying to run games like Ambrosia's old titles, e.g. Handsome Harry and Escape Velocity. I'm told some people got games working well enough, but I never could. All in all it was a hugely disappointing experience for me. One I've repeated every few years (when the desire to run old Mac only games becomes too strong to withstand) with only failure as the result. -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

Esacpe Velocity Nova is a universal binary for Mac OS X (up to at least 10.3.9), but that doesn't necessarily mean it will still work under the newest versions of the OS of course. I don't know what versions of the Mac and Mac OS X it runs on, but there's also the clone of the old Elite game called "Oolite" <http://www.oolite.org/> Plus there's Elite 4 campaign running on KickStarter on by the original Elite programmer David Braben <http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1461411552/elite-dangerous/posts>

I usually pull out the old SE and plug it in for a few hours of Lode Runner goodness once or twice a decade. > I'm a couple hundred old DOS games running great in DOSBox here. DOSBox > is truly wonderful software, and with a loader like Boxer > <http://boxerapp.com/> (contains it's own copy of DOSBox, so you'll only > need Boxer) it's almost entirely a GUI experience :-) Lode Runner was never quite right on any other platform but the Mac/A2. Prince of Persia II was only right on the Mac and the //gs, IIRC. The timing routines on Lode Runner were so tight on some levels that playing on a different system would either be impossible or would require relearning the whole level. When they "redid" LodeRunner they fucked up the timing so badly that almost none of the original levels were playable, including the very first level you had to get by in Championship (it simply was not possible to complete the first level). > Though I've a bunch of old systems and consoles emulated, DOSBox takes > care of 90% of my classic non-console gaming needs, as virtually every > personal computer game of that era was ported to the PC at some stage. Yeah, I have a lot of stuff in DosBox, which I never play. :/ > Still, nothing beats running the original Apple II Lode Runner, eh? > Virtual ][ is currently top of the heap in Mac Apple II emulators. > Though I still like Catakig a lot (cause I used it throughout my classic > Mac years). Hmm, I really haven't looked at A2 emulators. The biggest issue anymore is that the displays are soooo much larger in pixel density that a full sized lode runner game is about 5" across :) -- Stone circles were common enough everywhere in the mountains. Druids built them as weather computers, and since it was always cheaper to build a new 33-Megalith circle than to upgrade an old slow one, there were generally plenty of ancient ones around --Lords and Ladies

Playing titles like Lemmings, Crystal Caves or Choplifter at fullscreen on a 24" screen is just painful, heh :-) -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

I figured I'd fire up slrn tonight and get it cooking again before upgrading. I got a "bad CPU type in executable" error. It appears that the last time I "had it cooking" was in 2005. Mutt and tin fail as well with the same error. So I downloaded slrn and compiled it, but it puked. It needed the slang library. So I did that first and got everything up and running again. Now, it turns out I have forgotten everything I ever knew about slrn, so I have to relearn simple commands. Doing all this stuff for the first time over fifteen years ago was fun on DR3 MkLinux. I'm dumber now and it's less fun, but I'll "get 'er done". Then I'll upgrade to Mavericks. leo
