Yes. They would have sat back and given the equipment the admiring
respect for a former technology. They would have seen it in context of
its time rather than rush at it and start moaning that it wouldn't
produce a nice ice-cream cornet when shouted at.

I've stayed clear of this thread even though I too had a

Quite right. Plus they would have put any coins in their savings and

And later they would have proclaimed with great enthusiasm and gusto;
"Daddy, daddy, those were exciting times you lived through. The whole of
IT was exploding into new territory. The white-hot heat of that
technological revolution must have been thoroughly palpable; and very
uplifting.
Tell me more, tell me more".

Uh huh, sure they would have.

"Wo's dis den, this is shite!" would be more likely. Well, depending on
the kid, and the school the kid went to.

Riiiight. If we presented you with a butter churn and a bucket of cream
and told you that was the only way you'd be able to butter your
crumpets, you'd piss and moan about the work involved: "Why can't I just
go to Tesco and pick up a packet?"

One of the class projects in second grade was to pass around a bottle of creme,
each of us shaking it a few minutes before passing it on. By the end we had a
jar of butter and buttermilk, and ate the butter on saltine crackers.

You've missed the point of the kids' participation exercise. They're not
being told this is what you have from now on. They're being told this is
how a previous generation had it.

We have kids who do school topics on WWI life in the trenches at Mons
and Paschendaele. Not preparing to go and live like that; but getting to
understand what it was like.
We have kids learning about the battle of Hastings in 1066; and they're
not planning to go and form a shield-wall on the top of Senlac Hill; but
getting to understand what it was like.
We have kids researching life under the British Raj in India; and
they're not planning to go and reconquer the country; but getting to
understand what it was like.

That's all part of a rounded education; seeing how we got to where we
are and how it's moulded and changed us all. It helps tremendously in
creating people who can empathise better, sympathise better, be better
leaders of others.

Ed

I haven't seen NOS since my 2nd job in 1981. And yes, it was on a CDC
machine. 60-bit machine. Last 2 registers to read/write to memory.
Very strange.

My initiation into FORTRAN was on two NCR machines, a Century 100 and a
Century 200. That got me moving beyond the abacus & slide rule, though
there has never really been anything to replace those two. I still have
two, at ;east 50 year old, yellowing slide rules in my aging artifact
pile.

I kept the Pickett Slide Rule my father proudly gave me for a high
school graduation present. Once the HP45 came down in price, I never
touched it again.
