#74079 — Startup for Pages, Numbers

I note that under Yosemite (10.10.3) and using the newest versions of
either Pages (5.5.3) or Numbers (3.5.3), when I run the programs they
open first with a file selector. I almost never want a file selector
first, instead preferring a new blank template as identified in
preferences, for my default activity. Somewhere through the last
version of these apps and/or the update of Yosemite, this new default
activity has started up.

Does anyone know a way to avoid it?

Preferences --> General --> Use Template; then choose "Blank" from the
template chooser. After that, every time you open the app, you will
get a blank template.

That's exactly how it is set up now. As I sad above. It opens to a
file selector, I hit esc, then issue a apple-N, it opens a new "Blank"
template.

Lower left corner, click "New Document". It's not what you want, but
it saves a step from what you're now doing.

Oh, I see.:They were *making things more convenient*. That sucks. It
would seem that the simplest things, like starting the program,
quitting and opening files; these would be the things they'd be most
inclined to leave the hell along. Oh well.

Actually it saves a numeric step, but is more inconvenient; I have to
grab a mouse use my arm and shoulder. Esc, ⌘N is quicker.

Is all this to do with the latest Pages (I'm still on Pages 09)? 99% of
the time I want to go straight to File -> Open Recent. Is this
available at application open, or do you have to dismiss the Open File
dialog first? If so, *that* would be irritating.

Open Recent is available...

...as is New...

...there is no need to dismiss the Open dialog; just select New or Open
Recent and get busy.

I want a blank template and don't like fishing for a mouse--I like
opening blanks the way I always have.

Right.

So set the template to "Blank" in the Preferences, then hit Command-N
when you launch the app.

Where in that (besides once when you set the preferences) do you need
to "fish for the mouse"?

The dialog is not modal, so you do not have to dismiss/close it before
using the Open Recent menu.

But in my experience, the document I want to edit is in the dialog to
begin with.

Just Command-N is quicker still.

Launch Pages, see Open dialog box, type Command-N.

Done.

Okay--that's easy enough. Thanks.

Actually, you can just command-N in that dialog instead of clicking the
button. I didn't realize that when I wrote the previous message, but I
tried it just now.

Personally, I find the current way more useful because I edit existing
documents more often than creating new ones, so it saves me a step.

Sure--that's the way I do it to from time to time and so it's sometimes
handy. But even "reload" circumstance I don't keep all my "existing
documents" in any one folder. So the directory is still rarely useful.
If I'm editing existing docs while that folder is open, I can simply
double click them from the Finder, and that's usually what I do with
serial editing.

And the "Open Recent" sub-menu is available WHILE that dialog is open...

No need for escape.

Here's what worked for me in both apps. Go to Preferences > General >
For New Documents and click the radio button "Use template:" and then
choose a default template with the "Change Template" button. Clicking
"Use template" will de-select the "Show Template Chooser" radio button.

Jesus--did nobody read my post? That doesn't work more.
