Agreed. (I do toss absolute crap: obviously over/under exposed, OOF,
composed on excess caffeine, etc. - but that's not much). I keep them
all because there is other stuff there that is part of the photo
narrative of my experience (and to remind me not to make a particular
mistake again). Over the past couple years I've also geotagged my
outdoor photos (with a little GPS recorder doing the book keeping) and
that is another reason not to toss the more mundane photos.
Storage is so cheap that it's not worth the time to decide what meets
the threshold for disposal.
A friend of mine who makes his living with photography is much more of a
mercenary where dumping is concerned. (He still has stacks of hard
disks lying around). He uses an Aperture-like program for 'scoring' his
photos (I don't recall offhand what it's called). He goes through
hundreds of photos in a couple minutes. When the scoring is finished
the cream is at the top of the page and then he does his critical
selections. He doesn't think twice about deleting the rest - they are gone.

That depends too much on subjects, whether the weather was right and so
on. I have droughts and floods where volume shot and quality gotten are
concerned.

I feel I am merciless in my deletions. Perfectly good photos get axed if it's a near duplicate of another, if a slightly different angle or distance appeals a tad more, the expression on the subject is bettered by another, or, rarely, others. I do this more to save time going through them again than to save storage and backup time. Now, I have no idea why you put back in two froups that are unrelated to the current subject, and removed the group for which this is most germane. I have restored rec.photo.

Not at all. Photographers get it - esp. amateurs who can't always pick
and choose when and where they can be (Pros too, looking for particular
conditions).
I'd like to photograph Arches NP in the winter on a cold, clear, blue
sky morning or evening after a snow storm. Maybe one day.

Perhaps a better way, but when I do peruse my photos, even the
repetitious due to variations on a subset of a theme, I enjoy it and
find the odd pearl I hadn't considered in a different way before.

The original discussion was in those two froups and there it should

Lots of accounting. I pay $0 to get some useful photography functionality out of iCloud. But I'm not using it to backup, just to synchronize my photo libraries. So if you don't want to use it to synchronize your photo libraries, that is just fine. But don't confuse your reasons with the odd idea that it will cost you thousands of dollars oer year to use it.

And multiple (duplicated) entries in my calendars. A mess, what.
I'll take care of my own backups.

Either way. I also tried syncing with Google calendars some time (a few
years ago) and that had several hickups.

I'll hold off for the other reasons cited.

I'll try it again after I update to ML. OTOH, syncing my iPhone over
WiFi does about all I need.

I've never understood why it's such an issue - esp. in this age where
storage costs $0.00000000005 / byte and the backup itself, incremental
or full copy, is a completely automated process.
One then only needs to double up and keep a complete set offsite (1 - 2
week rotation in my case).

As nospam points out it is a known bug.
I sync my iPhone calendar to my mac via iTunes and that, while a
ridiculously silly application (iTunes), works very well for my needs.

Expert or not it's kinda hard to work around a bug that causes a
specific, repeatable problem with no published workaround. The bug may
be fixed by now. But I have no intention of screwing around with it as
resolving it last time meant delving into the backups to restore my
calendar and my current mode of operation is more than sufficient.
OTOH https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3871939?start=0&tstart=0
suggests that it is still an issue. When you need a 3rd party app to
fix buggy behavior it is time to ask: "should I wait 'til they actually
fix the bug?". In my case the answer is "Hell, yes."
I happily confess to being ignorant or inexpert in some area - look at
how nospam corrected my perception vis-a-vis photo importing from the
iPhone - but where the calendar-iCloud sync is concerned it was quite
batty. Period.

It has evolved into the worst pile of spaghetti imaginable. It needs a
complete new design based on sober requirements analysis, functional
breakdown and user interface design.
It is a blivet as is.

Work that a properly designed and tested facility would not require -
especially given the hype with which Apple foisted it upon us.

When there is a bug like that, and where I have another workaround that
is quite convenient, I avoid using the buggy s/w.
Even, if your read the discussions (above link) it is clear that
different people get entirely different results.
Not for me.
