LOVE! getting old hardware/software to work in today's world! That is why
I keep an old IBM PS/2, running OS/2 Warp Connect(still "new" at 1994),
but I do have an old DOS laptop, a real powerhouse Packard-Bell 486 with
12megs of ram. It was my daughter's in college in the middle 90's. It
still has all of her old school work on it! I added a 250meg HDD for her
school work, and it is running PC-DOS 6.1/WfWG 3.11.
I remember those type of Macs at my school, where the teacher down the
hall had a Mac class(this was 1987-94). She had Apple printers and
everything! I had a hard time teaching English with the whirring of
printers and clicking of keyboards coming out of the doors next door!

I get a kick out of it. : ) Old Macs bring back lots of good memories.
Before that, most computers were all textual and boring in comparison
(though I admit, I have never really found myself bored with any
technology - even my old TRS-80s : ).

I am surprised at the lack of speed. I know the serial port is slow on
the MacPlus, but still getting text from a web page shouldn't take
minutes. I wonder if there is an issue with the proxy they set up?

I thought about doing something like that for the Mac SE I have, but
then I decided that no, I didn't want to do that.

Almost certainly. They are using more than one proxy, and running them
on a slow system at that.

I have an Asante MacCon 10 megabit Ethernet card in my Mac SE/30, and
it's plenty fast, all things considered.

Right, but your SE/30 is a MUCH better computer than a MacPlus AND it
has a slot you can add a card. Oh, and it suports much more than 4MB of
RAM.

The SE/30 was Apple's best computer for many many years.

I had one, not sure if it had another letter, or they all had them, but
it had dual slot drives! Hot machine! Now you could back up your entire
system and files with ease!

Unfortunately it was the victim of burglars.

There were two varieties of the SE/30; one had two floppies, and the
other had one floppy and hone hard drive.

I never had a SE/30. We had a SE FDHD and the SE/30 was too expensive.
By the time I could afford one, I bought a Quadra 660av with a geoport
modem.

I started with a 128K mac, which got upgraded to a 512K and then a Mac
plus. I bought a 512Ke as a 2nd Mac, and then a used Mac SE from my
employer at the time (Claris) when it was selling off excess equipment.
When Claris was spun back into Apple, and I became an Apple employee, I
bought a Macintosh IIfx under the employee purchase program.

Further on, I bout a 7100, which I upgraded to a 7600 a few years
later, and bought a 7300 for my then spouse.

My next purchase was a grape iMac (and over time, sold all the others I
had), which I kept until I bought an iMac G4 (the "Pixar" model), and
kept it until I got the first Intel based iMac. When that one bit the
dust, I got a late 2006 iMac, which I kept until I got a a late 2012
iMac because the 2006 model wouldn't run 10.8.

The first computer I bought with my own money was an Apple //e and then a
//gs later which I had until late 2003. My first Mac that I bought was
the Quadra 660av, but the Mac SE had been a family computer for many
years at that point. I loved he 660av and held on to it for several
years past its useful life as I made the move to PowerPC machines.

I used an education discount to buy my first G3 tower, and I upgraded
the crap out of that machine, and the G4 Gigabit Ethernet that followed.

> Further on, I bout a 7100, which I upgraded to a 7600 a few years

During that period I was trawling the low end performas since I had very
little money. I found that I could do a rolling purchase where I bought
a, for example, 6400, and then sold it for nearly what I'd paid for it
when the next new shiny thing came along.

My iLamp iMac was, as it turned out, the most expensive computer I ever
bought because it "forced" to to upgrade every CRT I owned. I remember
one night I had the iMac connected to the 32" Sony Trinitron and was
mirroring a movie to it and I was watching the movie on the iMac's
screen instead.

I bought a 720p projector and a screen and a whole bunch of flat panels
for my computers and basically have avoided CRTs ever since.

I did recently have to find a 15" CRT to put in the rack at the office
because I didn't want to spend any money at all on a flat screen that I
would use once or twice a year. I got the CRT for $5 at Goodwill or ARC,
and then it was half price day.

Right now, I 'own' more computers than I ever have before. A 2012 iMac,
4 minis of various vintages, a 2009 iMac (or maybe 2010, I forget), two
MacBooks, Two Macbook Pros, 3 white box Pcs and one quad core i7
Wintendo. And I just ordered a new MacBook Pro so... That's 15? Oh, and
the chromebook.

I say 'own' because technically I bought one iMac for the kid and the
older iMac is not technically mine, but it's in the house and I'm in
charge of it completely, so...

My first-ever computer was an Apple ][; for some unknown reason, I
remember the date I purchased it: October 13, 1978. I got a loan from
the local credit union to buy it; it was the firs loan they ever made
for the purpose of buying a personal computer. I upgraded it to a ][+.
and later sold it and bought a //e. Subsequent to that, I won a //c in
a sales contest, and traded the //e for store credit at a comic-book
store.

Then I bought the Mac 128K.

I often ignore posts from Google. Use a real news client instead.

message there if you like.

LC (1991) --> IIsi (1997) --> PowerMac 5400 (2001) --> iMac Snow (2006)
--> Power Mac G4 M8573LL (2013-present) (still a slow adapter, lol).

I had that PowerMac 5400 logging on to the Net as recent as about 4
years ago until the ISP finally quit supporting the FreePPP software.
