Is the WWDC in June the most likely time for an announced update to the Mini? I'm wanting to buy one but MacRumors says to wait. Thanks -- Ed H.

There was a rumour of an update by the end of February, but that obviously didn't happen. *If* that was based on some fact, then it may have been delayed due to over-stocking of the existing model or some technical issue*, and the update may happen "soon". * It's probably doubtful it will see any major change to its design, although a switch to SSD and an even thinner case is a possibility.

- SSD is all but certain as a sole option - may even be PCIe
- Elimination of Firewire - likely
- dual Thunderbolt ports - likely
- fewer USB 3.0 ports - possible
- elimination of the SDXC slot - possible
Integrated "Apple TV" mode (s/w) - possible

If Apple doesn't intend up upgrade a model every year, then upgrades will try to catch the latest Intel chip to give the model a longer life. So if delaying release by a couple of months means they get a newer chip, then they will wait. It also depends on what role/market Apple wants for the Mini. That would dictate the features and types of plugs available on it. (server vs desktop).

Apple has been quietly pushing the Server version (with two hard drives installed) as the replacement for the discontinued XServe.

I waited, and waited, and waited.... Finally I decided I needed the Mini more than I needed the next version of the Mini. I got one. It does what I need. I only wish I had gotten it sooner. That way I would have had the use of it for several more months before it will inevitably become obsolete. YMMV.

Unless you have a pressing need, I'd wait. This is against the CW but I
suspect the next Mac Mini will be exceptionally high
- value / $
- performance / litre
- performance / Kg
- performance / watt.

I'm going to -guess- that Apple might have originally begun development of the Haswell-based Mini, then decided that the resulting product wouldn't be "enough of a step forward" from the current (i.e., "late 2012) one. So, they set their sights on a "Broadwell version" of the Mini, but hasn't the Broadwell release timeline been pushed back a bit? I hope they don't try to "shrink" the Mini's form factor to anything smaller than it is now. To do so, looks to me like they'd have to start "dropping ports" from the design. Also, since the Mini has gained acceptance for many server setups, seems to me they need to keep it somewhat "user accessible" and also provide for user-changeable drives and memory -- to suit server administrators. I would expect that the upcoming Mini would drop the firewire port in favor of two thunderbolt ports. Although I -prefer- the direct firewire port on the late-2012, as I still have a number of things that can connect to it.

They could make a new Mac Mini based on the Apple TV and call it the "Mac Micro", or perhaps take it back to the Apple I kitset-style roots and call it the "Apple Pi". ;-)

Ed H. <fake@notreal.net> wrote: > Is the WWDC in June the most likely time for an announced update to the > Mini? I'm wanting to buy one but MacRumors says to wait. I'm of the opinion that the Mini is skipping a generation, like it did in 2008, and the next model is still a few months away. In the Intel era, when the Mac Mini is updated it has happened within about a month of an iMac update (if not on the same day). There was no Mac Mini update around late 2013 (when the iMac was last updated), so an update to the Mac Mini around now would be a break in the pattern, unless Apple were to do a minor spec bump iMac update at the same time. Early 2006: iMac (Jan), Mac Mini (Feb) Late 2006: iMac (Sep), Mac Mini (Sep) Mid 2007: iMac (Aug), Mac Mini (Aug) Early 2008: iMac (Apr), no update of Mac Mini Early 2009: iMac (Mar), Mac Mini (Mar) Late 2009: iMac (Oct), Mac Mini (Oct) Mid 2010: iMac (Jul), Mac Mini (Jun) Mid 2011: iMac (May), Mac Mini (Jul) Late 2012: iMac (Oct), Mac Mini (Oct) Late 2013: iMac (Sep), no update of Mac Mini (now six months late) In addition, the core architecture of the Mini since the Late 2009 series has been based on the preceding 13" MacBook Pro: the design work was already done for what was the most popular Mac model, and some of that design work could be reused for the cheapest Mac model. There hasn't been an update to the non-retina MacBook Pro since Mid 2012, so there hasn't been an updated core architecture on which to base a newer Mac Mini since Late 2012, unless Apple uses a different notebook model as the basis for the next Mac Mini. I'm expecting no Mac Mini update until around the next iMac update, which will probably be Late 2014. That should be late enough that Apple will have already released the next MacBook Air and MacBook Pro (using Broadwell processors), and a Late 2014 Mac Mini could be based on the architecture of the next 13" MacBook Pro with Retina Display, e.g. using a PCIe SSD module instead of 2.5" SSD, which might mean dropping one of the 2.5" drive bays and changing the body design. If Apple were to release a Mac Mini before Late 2014, it is more likely to be a minor refresh with Haswell processors instead of Ivy Bridge, with only minor if any changes to the body. This would be a badly timed update, since Haswell has been available for at least six months, and Broadwell is coming soon. The only significant benefits of such an update would be better integrated graphics, and probably Thunderbolt 2. Broadwell's main benefit is likely to be even better graphics and/or lower power consumption, which could allow the Mini to be redesigned even smaller (but the internal power supply and space required for the connectors are limiting factors). In either scenario, I would not be surprised to see the demise of the Firewire port (replacing it with a second Thunderbolt port), so if you want Firewire, there is an advantage to getting the current Mini rather than waiting for the next one. I wouldn't expect either possible variant of the next Mini to be worthy of a media event. It would just be available for purchase and be mentioned in a press release. Therefore don't expect any particular timing (such as WWDC). -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

If the Mini has had lacklustre sales and serves just a niche, a incremental upgrade will get the treatment as above. But it is also posisble that Apple will want to re-invent/re-task the Mac Mini, at which point it would be part of a major announcement.

It's also possible that Apple will upgrade the mini and cancel the iMac, letting the mini fill that slot in Apple's product lineup. Improbable, you say? So is your possibility.

So if Apple isn't happy with the future of Mac Mini, they could do what they did to the Xserve and just exit that market. Remember that Apple has its own idea of what the future will be like and forges ahead with that idea. (getting rid of optical media, getting rid of servers, firewire etc etc) What if the Mac Mini is not part of Apple's vision for the future ? On the other hand, they let the Mac Pro languish for years and brought it back, albeit as an diskless appliance. Personally, what I think is missing from Apple's "diskless" lineup is a central file server. Mac Nini doesn't have the physical size to be a storage engine. Having a file server product would complement the now diskless Mac Pro and the iMacs that are going SSDs.

The Mac Mini Server already comes with two 1TB drives installed, which may be able to be user-upgraded to bigger drives.

Not really. Drive replacement in the Mac Mini is not a task for which Apple has supplied instructions so their intention is that drive replacement is only done by authorised service agents. The process of extracting the drives in the current body requires some disassembly for the first drive and substantial disassembly for the second drive. There is limited scope for upgrading to bigger drives as the Mac Mini uses 2.5" drive mechanisms. Capacity increases for 2.5" drives seem to be taking a long time. The current Mac Mini came with 1 TB drives about 18 months ago, and I can only find one larger capacity drive available now as a bare mechanism: Hitachi has a 1.5 TB drive. Everyone else still maxes out at 1 TB (ignoring WD's hybrid Black2, which doesn't support Macs, and is only 1 TB HD + 120 MB SSD so the main benefit is speed). The obvious method of expanding storage for a Mac Mini Server is to connect an external multi-drive bay, same as every other current Mac. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

I'm not sure where you're looking, but a quick Google search turns up quite a few 2TB 2.5" hard drives from Western Digital, Seagate, and others ... whether they all "support Macs" and heppily would work in a Mac Mini is a different question though.
