In a word, no. The connectors are "keyed" such that they can only be connected one way. Trying to plug it in any way other than "the right way" is impossible unless one or both of the connectors are physically damaged. One of the design goals of the USB spec was making it impossible to connect a USB device "improperly". Technically, the "naked connector" type thumb-drives that MIGHT be "upside down pluggable" aren't "USB" devices at all, since they don't strictly adhere to the USB specification. Any device that doesn't conform to the spec is forbidden to be sold as a "USB" device - The "USB" name and mark is trademarked/copyrighted/whatever, and to be able to use it, you have to submit a sample of your device to the folks who license its use. They'll check it out, and if it's close enough to the spec to satisfy them, they'll give you a license to use the "USB" labeling. If your device is rejected for whatever reason, they'll deny you the license to use the labeling. Use the labeling without their OK, and you're in for some serious legal hurt for infringement. Last I heard, they were still being *VERY* anal about it. -- Security provided by Mssrs Smith and/or Wesson. Brought to you by the letter Q

The "metal" of the USB drive (usually they're plastic) won't be a conductive metal ... if it was, then the USB drive wouldn't work since the normal connectors would short across the "metal" holding them.

Should I just discard remaining unformatted disks and use only flash drives? Never have had one of them to fail; weak link with them seems to hubs rather than the media. Which is more likely to fail... flash drive itself or the slot into which it is plugged?

Depends on the design of the USB drive ... some of them are so thin and flimsy that they easily bend and break.
