Subjectold laser printer question

I was recently given two old Apple LaserWriters. One is an NT, the
other a Personal 320. Neither have ethernet ports, just localTalk.

I can't use them. Does anyone know of anyplace I can give or donate
these where they can actually be used, or is tech recycling the only
real option. They seem to work fine, they just don't do me a bit of
good.

Ask the folks in comp.sys.mac.vintage. No doubt someone will want to take
them off your hands. You might also check in these groups:

comp.sys.mac.printing
comp.sys.mac.wanted
comp.sys.mac.misc
comp.sys.mac.hardware.misc

Whatever you do, please don't just chuck them into the garbage. Someone
out there can and will gladly use them!

And dependent on the laxity of enforcement in your area, you could be
prosecuted for "improper disposal of hazardous materials."

OTOH, My LaserWriter Pro that I finally dumped was because it not be
fixed (no one made the rubber rollers any more to rehab the entire
internals of the printer, according to Apple). I'd gotten 7 years out
of it, so I wasn't complaining. It weighed a good 70 lbs. and would
have cost more to ship anywhere than to just take it to recycling.
Apparently Apple prepays for all their stuff to be recycled.

Recycle them. The last version of MacOS that could use AppleTalk (not
AppleTalk over Ethernet) was 10.5, according to Wikipedia.

If one really wants to use them, though, it's no stretch to have an
older version of OS X on any spare Mac to share the printer from. Waste
not, want not I say :-)

The person who gave them to me offered them on FreeCycle four times
before he offered them to me directly. FreeCycle is good for many
things, but even it has its limits.

I was hoping someone had a great idea I had not thought of in this
forum. Guess these are just spent. Pity.

I'll try the vintage group before I give up the ghost.

If you are near an Apple Store, you might call them and see if they will
accept the devices for recycling. Apple has a program for recycling
their old products, but I don't know if it includes things this old.

You might also check into local charities like Salvation Army, etc.
I've donated old computers to a local non-profit. This is "Real Change"
in Seattle, which publishes a weekly newspaper, staffed by homeless
people. They use donated equipment to produce the paper, and also to
train their staff in repair work, retail, and other job skills.

It's a pity to throw out those old Apple LaserWriters. I ran a
LaserWriter 600 for many years. It had a genuine Adobe PostScript
engine, and produced better looking type and graphics than the H-P
LaserJet that replaced it. But the old machines are slow compared to
recent ones.

I wonder if you could still use an ethernet-to-LocalTalk adapter to run
the old LaserWriters. They still show up on the web, for example:

http://www.amazon.com/Asante-Talk-Ethernet-LocalTalk-Bridge/dp/B00004VUFW

You probably won't find a custom driver that will work on OS X. But if
they have PostScript, maybe they can be run as a generic PostScript
device.

I don't have one to test, but this probably would work.

1. Get a Mac with both LocalTalk and ethernet ports.

2. Run the bridge software that used to be available to bridge the
networks. There were two versions, an expensive one which did
general ip over localtalk routing, and one specific for laserwriters.
Obvioulsy I have forgotten the name, someone else may remember it.

3. Set up a linux system running Netatalk, and CUPS.

Print to the printer from really old Macs, using localtalk.

Print to the printer on newer Macs using ethernet based AppleTalk.

Print to the printer using Netatalk, from Linux, Windows, and modern Macs.

Geoff.

LaserWriter Bridge was the printer-only variant, LocalTalk Bridge the
fully featured version.

That works up to Mac OS X 10.5, since later versions dropped all
remaining support for the AppleTalk protocol stack.

(10.5 dropped file sharing over AppleTalk but still supporting printing
over AppleTalk.)

Did you mean to say CUPS rather than Netatalk there?

New Mac --> CUPS --> Netstalk --> bridge --> printer.

CUPS and Netatalk run on the same Linux system.

You still need Netstalk to speak to the printer.

No, this on't work with any of the newer OS X versions. It converts
"EtherTalk" to "LocalTalk" and does not understand TCP/IP. Since Apple
dropped EtherTalk in OS X 10.6, no chance to use it on anything higher
than 10.5.

The LaserWriter has a serial connector which you may be able to use in
later OS X versions. Try to get a printserver which can translate TCP/IP
to serial, and a cable to connect the printserver's serial port (PC
style) to Apple's miniDIN style port. I am not sure whether such
printservers are at all available used or new nowadays.

I'm in NZ so I can't help you, but those are two old workhorses that
still do a fine job today, if you can find a working localtalk to
ethernet adaptor or old Mac to run them from (and don't mind associated
hassles in getting the print job where it needs to go, now old
communication protocols have been removed from newer versions of OS X).
But I'm only telling you what you already know. I just wanted to express
how much I like those old LaserWriters. They built them to last, it
seems. A rare thing nowadays in tech.
