The hockey gold medal game was on at 6am or 8am Eastern Time in the rest
of the world, but was tape-delayed 12+ hours, right?

NBC: Internet? There is no Internet. Nothing happens until we say it
happens.

I despised NBC before comcrap bought them, but now I despise them

I've heard very good things about CBC, but I don't know what might
be a better option in the U.S.

Nope, it was aired live on NBC Sports Network. They both were (men's
and women's). Also the bronze-medal game for the men, and possibly
also for the women, too; I didn't check. There was lots of live
coverage on NBC Sports Network this time; less on MSNBC/USA/etc.
now that NBC owns a dedicated sports network.

I don't know whether there was any live coverage on NBC itself this
year, due to the time-zone difference. They might have done some
early-morning coverage of evening events in Sochi, or maybe not.

Not sure what you mean by "there is no Internet." NBC was providing
all events live on the Internet for subscribers to participating
cable/satellite systems. I watched a couple things live late at night
on my computer.

I mean that NBC is under the delusion that if they tape-delay an event,
no one will ever know.

The web site http://www.medalspercapita.com has a weighted medals per
capita ranking as one of its many interesting listings. I liked the GDP
one - the US came in 20th in that one.

That's a vagary of the "reporting." The discrepancies arise because the
IOC charter prohibits reporting a "score" in that way so any country can
count the medal standings up any way they choose. I dunno -- give
points: 3 for gold, 2 for silver, 1 for bronze; add 'em up; would seem
as fair a count as any.

That does seem like a logical way of doing it.

There is no logical way to count medals. At the end of the day, all that
counts is who wins gold in HOCKEY for the winter olympics :-)

If you define "medal count" as the number of times a country had an
athlete (or team) on the podium, then gold, silver, bronze are of equal
value and the total medal count could make sense.

It may not mean who is the best country, but rather which country rannks
in the top 3 most times.
