I've found the cause, but not the cure.  It happens after trying to use
the built-in dictionary; the dictionary hangs, and after exiting the
bubble, the system does not respond to keypresses.

This happens in mail.app, but I have not tried it in any other
application as yet.  I'll experiment later, and file a bug report with
Apple.

Oh, I'm running the 10.10.3 beta, so if you're on an earlier version of
Mac OS X, you may not experience this problem.

Are you running the beta?

My keyboard doesn't stop responding right away, but switching to Safari
doesn't bring Safari to the foreground/ I have to use Mission Control to
switch. Then, later, the keyboard stops working.

Yeah, I am trying to track down exactly when the keyboard stops version.
