#58036 — Free PowerMac If You Can Carry It Away

It breaks my heart to take this Dual 2GHz G5 to the recycle bin, but
that's what I'm going to do on Monday, 24 March, if no one picks it up
in Gambrills, Maryland, about 12 miles west of Annapolis, by that date.

Perfect working condition. 2.5GB RAM, two video cards, two 250GB hard
drives, Samsung LED display. Airport wireless, FireWire 400 & 800,
SuperDrive, Gigabit Ethernet, weighs a ton. Everything but the keyboard
and mouse (uses latest USB peripherals). No non-Apple software
included. Great file server. Amazingly fast, reminding me once more of
the superiority of the G5 over Intel processors--if only they had been
able to make them run cooler.

Dollar value of this machine somewhere near zero. Positively no
delivery and no shipping.

I know exactly how you feel. I have a perfect 2002 QS sitting in a
bedroom doing nothing, have not been able to bite the bullet on it
like you. But I did throw out some old school sports gear from when I
was 8 to 11 years old. And I did give away the majority of a
lifetime's framed photographs (these seeming to have more universal
appeal).

Why not give it to some second-hand aid store instead?

...Sadly it's such a long walk from Denmark to Maryland - else I'd
gladly take it.:-)

cheers, Erik Richard

Even they don't want it.

Tried that first. They won't take it. Too old.

Yeah -- anything less than Core 2 Duo isn't good for much. Same goes for
the Windows machines.

I'm not going to spend a lot of time defending a machine that I'm
trying to give away free, but this machine is /still/ a fireball with
Final Cut Studio, Photoshop, and other heavy-lifting software. One who
possessed the necessary skills could use it to make a Hollywood movie
or a prime-time TV show or a National Geographic photo spread. That
ought to be good for something, no?

That's kinda the point. It's certainly going to be worth more to someone
other than you than yourself. In fact, I just looked at some recent completed
listings on eBay and found prices between $100 and $395 for similar
model:

eBay Link: <http://preview.tinyurl.com/o3gjkjn>

Personally, I'd probably auction it on eBay with a starting price of
$150 and see where it goes from there.

Sorry, I didn't mean it that way. I meant that no one wants such a
machine. Most thrift shops won't take computers at all these days.
Usenet is a limited audience. Have you got a Kijiji where you are? I bet
someone would take it.

True that - with the exception of Mac minis. Those little things can sit
on a shelf and easily serve web pages, email, or other things all day
long without complaint. Seems at the very least, you could list it on
eBay for $10 and see what comes of it (sold to locals only), though.
That's probably what I'd do (only I'd ask just under the current market
price based on recently closed auctions for that model).

O, no, I will never forget my Craigslist experiences. In a recent one I
was giving away *free* a set of JBL Creature Speakers, almost BNIB.
"You're a godsend! My son needs these for his computer games and we're
poor..." "I can pick them up within an hour." "Tell me what time to
pick them up," and so on. No-shows, all.

Every time I have used Craigslist I have had the same experience:
people want it, they are grateful to have found it, I am an angel,
they'll be right over to get it, and they don't show up.

I consider it far less trouble to use something like eBay where you
simply ship it off to them after receiving payment.

I consider it far less trouble to have somebody come over to my house to
take it, than have to box up and ship something as big and heavy as a
PowerMac. To each his own, I guess.

Indeed. That's why my post said "Positively no delivery and no
shipping."

I found a taker, and I found him on Craigslist, my earlier experiences
notwithstanding. He is a collector and fixer-upper of old Macs. I
apologized for this one being in perfect working condition. He seemed a
very nice fellow, and after a bit of mis-communication managed to
arrive only 1-1/2 hours after promised. Five stars.

Oh, Davoud, you silly goose you. News flash: Not everyone on planet
Earth has the same opinion as you. If I have an opinion, I can state it
- and there's nothing you can do to stop me. Sorry if that chaps your
ass, but this is Usenet, and that's how it is. You seem to love
repeating that you've killed my posts every chance you get. I hope that
gives you at least some enjoyment - seems maybe you need more joy in
your life. ; )

Not me. If I can avoid having to invite some stranger over to my house,
I'll gladly pack something in a box and give it to the UPS driver the
next day. : )
