Or it was. No idea what it is now. Still "Macintosh HD", at least up to and including my MacBook Pro (Retina, Late 2013), which came with Mavericks preinstalled. Even though there is no "hard drive" in the computer. As the name of the startup drive is rarely used in command line contexts, I don't care about having a space in its name, so I changed it to reflect the computer's name with " SSD" as a suffix instead of " HD". -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

It no longer works. Even Apple > admitted there was a problem and *tried* to fix it with 10.10.1 and failed. Wi-Fi works fine for me in 10.10.1, as it did in 10.10.0. That particular problem is apparently affecting some Macs, but it is not a universal bug affecting every Mac. That makes it difficult to fix, because the conditions required to trigger the problem may not be obvious. It may also be multiple problems with similar symptoms, each affecting a subset of Macs. 10.10.1 may have fixed some of the problems but not all of them. In your case, earlier posts indicate you think you are affected by a Yosemite Wi-Fi bug because your computer doesn't immediately connect to your Wi-Fi network. Have you investigated the other possible causes for that behaviour? An obvious one is if you have connected to a lot of Wi-Fi networks and built up a large list, the system tries each network in the list until it finds one. A big list means it will take longer to find a particular network. The list is searched from top to bottom, so you should have your most freqently used networks near the top of the list. Reordering my Wi-Fi network list and purging networks I'd probably never use again made a big difference to my Wi-Fi connection times in earlier OS X versions. Sometimes there is a delay, which I think is because the system missed the network the first time around, and it needs to get to the end of the list before trying the first network again. Keeping the list short reduces this delay. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

Keeping the list short > reduces this delay. Yep. I have had that exact same experience with my wife's MacBook pro, which had over 20 remembered networks, of which our home network was not first-most. We had taken the thing on a road trip and accumulated a bunch of WiFi networks during the trip. After cleaning up the list and ensuring our home network was first in the list, the slow connectivity issue was gone. And this was before Yosemite was released, so I know very well that problem existed long before Yosemite came around. : ) -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. Anyone can fall prey to faulty memory. Selective memory isn't evidence of a downward trend in quality over time. You still have yet to show a shred of evidence to support your claim. Fail. > The fact that non-Apple fan boys agree with this adds to it The only thing added is more nonsense. > but the key people's opinions is what counts. Actually, what counts is the truth - and nothing much else. So far all I see is a bunch of people conveniently dismissing the fact that bugs have always been around while pointing at recent bugs as supposed evidence of a decline in quality. You haven't proven your theory that there is a downward trend in quality. Fail. > BTW, Apple supports a limited set of hardware configs. It ism't that > hard to do QA on its new software on all the hardware that Apple has > certified will run it. If hardware were the only variant that might mean something. Your naivety is showing. Frankly the people who I have heard complan the most about Apple's software degeneration are Apple users and Apple fans themselves. Look at Apple's own support forums and you'll see legions of loyal Apple users complaining about bugs and literally PLEADING for resolution. Some of those bugs are over a decade old now. Part of this is Steve's legacy, too - while Steve was very wise in not asking the general public what they wanted when introducing a new product, he instituted a policy at Apple that problems and complaints receive no official acknowledgement either. It makes it impossible to determine if bugs are going to be fixed, software supported into the future, and so forth. This policy assuredly makes it easier for Apple to deal with complaints - by pretending they don't exist - but it also demonstrates a lack of care for the customer.

In other words, same shit, different day. So far I've seen zero evidence of a decline in quality - just a bunch of fools claiming the existence of problems magically equates to a downward trend. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I have no clue who you are but J-R's a solid dude other than wanting
harder proof of things when one states something about Apple.
I get that.
He's wrong of course. But I get it. ;-)
