Applications will work by just merely recompiling... or I think so... It would be idiotic to have one GTK+ or Qt application for X another for Wayland.

The most popular UNIX on the planet, according to the opensource group, does
not even ship with X11.
ification/> OR <http://wp.me/p1cB5i-1bn>
-----
The Open Group, an international vendor- and technology-neutral
consortium, has announced that Apple, Inc. has achieved UNIX®
certification for its latest operating system Mac OS X version
10.11 known as ³El Capitan.²
...
Mac OS X is the most widely used UNIX desktop operating system.
Apple¹s installed base is now over 80 million users. It¹s
commitment to the UNIX standard as a platform enables wide
portability of applications between compliant and compatible
operating systems.
-----
Add to that both Mir and Wayland have X compatibility. I think it is a good
thing that the open source ecosystem is working to move past some of the
weaknesses of X11 *and*, hey, what happened to the idea that choice is good?
With Wayland both KDE and GNOME, the developers claim, will be ported to it
(<http://wayland.freedesktop.org>). Here is some info on at least claimed
benefits of Wayland and why people are looking to move to it:

It's the desktop metaphor that matters, and X11 is a major sphagetti mess. Desktop linux would be better off with a streamlined GUI engine built from scratch. -- When told the reason for daylight savings time the Old Indian said, "Only the government would believe that you could cut a foot off the top of a blanket, sew it to the bottom, and have a longer blanket."

Nah, the Linux tradition is to fork shit no matter how bad it smells. New ideas are rare, most software is based on some other software which is based on some other software which is based on some other software that was abandoned because they realized that they author is an 8 year-old with Tourette's. -- A.M

Just wished that they added this one simple graphics primitive... drawpoint() or plot() with a color parameter, but they didn't. A lot of people have complained about it not being there. These days it gets a little harder because the OEMs, like Dell, have pretty much figured out the product categories. In the past, they were not as inclined. Now they have basic machines for not a lot of money, and workstation class computers built to easily execute SolidWorks or AutoCAD. Sometimes, though not too often, I can get a little lost trying to find just the right configuration and I love that I can just build it myself. A really good example of this is Apple. We waited for years for an updated Pro Tower for Final Crap Pro. Then they released iMovie Pro and a lame-ass garbage can. All the Pro Tower users wanted was Thunderbolt, updated chassis for better video and next-gen XEONs. That's all they had to do. It all went down hill. Pretty much everything went either back to Avid or sideways to Premiere Pro. I have seen a lot of users drop iMovie Pro. Apple was doing so well there for a while. No native BD support. No BD authoring tools. Hell, DVD Studio Pro isn't even offered for sale now. Just a real slap in the face for their Pro customers. Many migrated to Dell Workstations and Adobe. > Couldn't tell you how many, but it was a bunch over the years. Our > biggest clients were schools, usually 100+ computers at a time. You definitely don't speak for all Mac Pro owners - certainly not me. I think the new Mac Pro is a great fit for my needs - better than the 2008 Mac Pro tower I have now. I used to do DVD authoring; I even developed a course on the subject for a local community college (which never happened). I still keep DVD Studio Pro around (great program!) but I haven't launched it for years. The last time was just to create a compilation DVD for a semi-famous animator friend of mine. The warranty on the whole machine is easier to > > deal with than the warranty for each individual part that might fail. Is > > there a warranty on the fan? > > Not at all disingenuous. In fact, typically the warranty is much better > on the parts than on a whole machine. Samsung for example warranties the > SSD drive for 5 years, sometimes 10 years. That sure beats the 90 / 1 > year warranty from Apple by a country mile. so install an ssd yourself. big deal and apple's warranty is 1 year w/optional 3 year extended warranty, not 90 days. > Often what you'll find is that for a modestly knowledgeable person > capable of walking into any DIY type shop you'll get a much better deal, > better service, much faster service and your warranty will outpace > virtually every vendor in the business. only if their time is worth nothing. > And yes, the fan is covered, though I wouldn't care that much as the fan > typically costs so little that I can easily buy a better one, again with > a warranty, for very little money. > > > Apple's warranty is for one year; you can pay for an extra 2 years > > (AppleCare) which is definitely worth it. > > I have been buying and servicing Apple products for decades. Well aware > of their warranty. Dell's is cheaper and better. And the warranty you > get from the parts when you build it yourself, blows them both away. you claim to be well aware of apple's warranty yet you get it wrong.
