The whole events structure is gone. Photos are automatically sorted to
various levels of granularity based on the location and time.

And I was wrong in my previous post, one thing that is still better in
iPhoto is searching. For example, I don't think there is anyway to
search *in Photos* for "images that are 1920x1080".

Of course, you can do that search in the Finder, so ...

I doubt they will even go that far. iWeb and WebObjects still work
fine on 10.10 despite being abandoned for years.

What Apple's saying is that Aperture's "done" but I don't think they
are saying they will take special measures to ensure that it breaks.

Probably not, but we have no way of knowing what the future will bring,
and what incompatibilities will arise. That has happened in the past.

...but lets just say that you have an image file asset library of
40,000 -100,000 RAW files. Would you take the gamble to use an end of
life application, with no support to manage those assets?
I chose to go with the aplication which won that battle, Lightroom.

I will never again purchase any Adobe software - if it is even possible
to "purchase" it in the future.

If I have to use Aperture on an OS that no longer receives regular
updates, that is fine by me.

That is your decision to make, I am not going to ask why.

> - if it is even possible to "purchase" it in the future.

Certainly not any of the latest Adobe applications, those are all in
the subscription model Creative Cloud. However, Lightroom is available
for purchase either as a box version, or via download, as is Photoshop
Elements.

Then that seems to be your best option. Though for now it appears that
Aperture will function under OSX10.10.3, just be wary of future OS
updates.

up until you want to run an app that requires a newer os or your old

correct. all apple is saying is that at some point aperture may break
and there won't be any fixes.

Nothing stops you running an older OS in a VM. That's the point at
which you take action.

Do it now or do it later - it's a pain in the donkey either way.
Applications, and their file formats, seem to be time limited.

it doesn't affect me at all.

aperture always lagged lightroom from the start. it was always an
afterthought for apple.

there had always been ongoing rumours that it was going to be cancelled
and most recently with several years of no significant updates, the
writing was on the wall that it was dead.

Standard practice for any app which is no longer supported.

MT Newswatcher is a good example of Apple pulling a framework out,
making a number of apps no longer functional. It could happen sometime
in the futiure for some framework used by iPhoto.

On the other hand, Apple specifically disabled Server Monitor/Admin apps
from launching, so this was an active decision to prohobit those apps
from running.

There may come a time where using iPhotos could corrupt the image
inventory that is expected by Photos, at which point, Apple might decide
to disable iPhotos alltogether. Only time will tell.

Where "a number" is evidently "one" many years after the framework was
deprecated and 20 years after the framework was introduced.

The particular example of the framework which MT-Newswatcher needed
(Open Transport) has only generally been known to affect that one
application. I haven't heard of any other widely used applications that
stopped working as of 10.9 because they were still using Open Transport
at least six years after Apple warned it was deprecated and would be
going away at some point.

Older applications like AppleWorks and Eudora were already not working
as of 10.7, so 10.9 didn't change anything as far as they were
concerned.
