They're on sale today, but won't ship until Febrary.

then it changed to January, and now February. Looks like Cook did with
the Mac Pro this year what he did with the iMac last year.

By the way, a Mac Pro with 2.7 GHz 12 core processor, 64 GB RAM, 1TB
flash storage, FirePro D700 GPU, Magic Trackpad, and Wireless Keyboard
lists for only $9,737. Anyone want to give me one for Yule (or
whatever holiday you choose)?

I seriously doubt I would need anything beyond the base model,
personally. And I already have my own display, keyboard, and trackpad.
So mine will probably cost closer to the $2999 base price.

Notice that I didn't include a display in that summary?

I would probably bump the SSD to 512GB. If I were to buy one, I'd be
spending $3299.

One downside: if you want to put in 16GB memory modules, you cannot mix
those with 4GB or 8GB modules.

12GB is probably enough, but if I upgraded the RAM I'd add 2x8GB for
24GB total (from Crucial or DMS).

And given its 'stylish' form factor, by the time you add what's
neceesary to make it a reasonable workstation, it looks like this:

I'm an engineer, so I can tell you with 100% certainty that most of the
time style has no sense. That's one reason engineers and many other
techies have a hard time grokking 'style'. We have a hard time figuring
out how to approach utter nonsense.

That's the second thing most people turn off when they turn their modem
on ... the first thing they apparently turn off is their brain. :-(

No, I would not need to add anything to it (well, a screen). We've been
through this several times, most people who need high-end hardware do
not need many terabytes of space. Most of those who DO, will have XSAN
or NAS solutions in place.

I'll be buying a few - right after enough other people
doing video work have not reported any problems...

In the mean time, the three old Mac pros I have are
doing pretty well - only one crash in the past couple
years. Of course, that one crash was with all the
producers, and probably 200 other people, watching.
Heh.

Only a few hours after the pre-order release and already shipping
estimates have sliped to February, plus Apple has released an EFI
Firemware Update for it.

I'm waiting for my current Mac Pro to bite the dust before I do that,
and it's apparently got a lot of life left in it yet. : )
