Is there a good document that allows one to know what to expect in terms
of all the changes from Snow Leopard to Mavericks ? (Both in user
interface and at system level (for instance, how to enable telnet, how
to disable this and that (especially that auto save thing, enable "save
as" etc).

Since one is skipping the big changes made with Lion, looking at only
what is new for Mavericks isn't enough for one to prepare for the rather
large change.

This might help some even though it isn't specific with regard to some
old software which hasn't move with the times. If you use MT-NW, you
will lose it.

I just made that leap from OSX 10.6.8 SL, yesterday skipping both Lion & ML.

All went surprisingly smoothly with the 5+GB download in 40-45 minutes
and about 35 minutes to complete the install.

There were some losses, but nothing insurmountable, mostly stuff like
MS Office X. The change in Mail makes it somewhat different, but not
intolerable. Safari seems to be running faster & smoother now. I was
also very comfortable with "OpenSpaces" in SL and I will miss it. Over
time I should get just as comfortable with the way Mavericks deals with
the workspace.

Try TotalSpaces2. It will cost you $18 to purchase.

Thanks! Other folks have guided me towards TotalSpaces2, and I will be
exploring that option.
