I started at the online store with a base model Pro then added a few moderate upgrades to future-proof it for a year or two. It came to $7200. At that cost, switching to Linux for my next upgrade is completely justified. I don't like the "trash can" form either. I have both a Mac Mini and an old Mac Pro. The Mac Pro consumes less desk space because everything packs inside of it in a tight form. The Mini is a mess of cables and peripherals.

Take the Mac Mini and all it's extras, and put them inside an old Mac Pro case ... problem solved! ;-)

I've got a recent Mini, with an older-form MiniStack sitting on top as a TM drive. Atop that is a £20 DVD drive. All these are connected via short cables and it was quite cheap as the MiniStack was recycled from a previous configuration. With an SSD inside it's quite fast enough, too. -- Tim "That excessive bail ought not to be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted" -- Bill of Rights 1689

A current discussion on Macintouch says that Hackintoshes are relatively easy to assemble these days. If you like the Mac OS, that could be an alternative. You get the most bang for your buck reproducing a high-end machine. <http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/apple/index.html#d13dec2013>

I considered a hackintosh before buying this iMac (i7, 3.4 GHz).
To build a similar spec machine AND get a photography quality monitor
would have cost nearly as much and then there's the issue of what Apple
might do in the future to kill H'toshes with 'clever' OS updates/releases.
OTOH Linux sucks as a desktop environment for photography and office work.
