#61161 — Yosemite Test Release

SubjectYosemite Test Release
Message-ID<c0hfsnFmodmU1@mid.individual.net>
On the day Yosemite was announced by Apple I signed up to be one who
tested beta releases. Since then I haven't had any indication from
Apple as to when such a release for testing would be available. Is
there anyone out there that perhaps knows when such a release will be
made?

From a mailing list published by the owner of Small Dog on 6 June -

| As a developer, I have access to the beta versions of this software
| [Yosemite] and I am the official Small Dog guinea pig. I will be able
| to report over the next several weeks on my experiences. If you sign
| up at Apple's website, you could be a part of the public beta program
| that will be coming this summer. Suffice it to say, at this point,
| the first releases of the software are very buggy and Apple has work
| to do. On the other hand, the new features that I have have been
| checking out are very cool.

I agree with him. It is cool. There's much crashiness. So far, I am only
running Apple software, Mac App Store software, and the various CLI
tools I already had installed. I haven't even put Launchbar 6 on yet.

No.

But I can guess that it will not come much before the end of the month
if it comes in this month at all. I would not be at all surprised to see
several developer releases before it goes into beta.

Generally, Apple releases a new build about every two weeks.

Generally.

About.

I think the official OS release was said to be "Fall" / Autumn, but no
specific date was given, as usual. The public test will be for the
final few beta versions, so could be a little while away yet - late
July or some time in August, or even early September, that would still
leave them time for the official release in late September.

At the keynote, Craig Federighi said the public beta would be in
"Summer". Based on Apple's normal definitions, that is most likely to be
July or maybe August, but it shouldn't be as late as September.

The public release is scheduled for "Fall", which would be somewhere in
September to November, probably aiming for late October (a year after
Mavericks).

On the UK site it says "Coming this Autumn".

I hope there's a way to turn off this blasted translucency; it's just a
distraction. I also note that the bloke who wrote Eudora should be
happy now: with the new, flat, look, he can now remove the option to
"Waste CPU cycles with trendy 3D junk".

Still, one plus is that they've at last defined what the green traffic
light does.

Apparently there is; it's been referred to as "dark mode".

What, in Yosemite? That'd be good.

Apropos, why don't they call it El Capitan? The images I've seen appear
to feature it.

Because El Capitan is not a location; it is a thing.

Good point. Besides, Apple isn't only featuring El Cap; a bunch of
the new publicity shots feature Half Dome wallpaper:

And I think that might be Tenaya Lake behind the email windows.

But that's a dark theme. I hate dark themes. I just want a checkbox that
tells translucency to go away.

That's simple.

But implementing a Sys Prefs display option (in "General" I guess), to
control it is an ugly complication of the kind that Apple despise.

Sorry, but Apple must provide a switch to turn off undesirable features
that are only used during keynote addresses as marketing gimmicks. That
fits quite well within the system preferences.

Apple could have a single switch "turn off marketing gimmicks" which
would revert the OS back to Snow Leopard without any of the undesirable
features added since then :-)

There is also an option in System Preferences > Accessibility that
allows to turn off transparency both in menu bar and windows sides.

Not "duck" mode, then.

Actually, it is not. It is 1) subtle 2) distinguishes active and
inactive windows 3) highlights content areas. It's good. It'll be
EXCELLENT on a retina display.

Gods don't like people not doing much work. People who aren't busy all
the time might start to think.

Incredible. I don't think most Apple employees are convinced of this
translucency lunacy, yet, you manage to find some way to spin this as a
good thing.

Are you related to Jony Ive per chance ? Seems to me it would be the
only explanation for you defending a feature that is not only unwanted,
but which actually hinders readability.

There are a lot of people who are not adversely affected by
translucency. I, for one, don't mind it, except in the menu bar, and
I've turned it off there. I suspect that with other desktop pictures,
I wouldn't mind having it, but not with the one I have now.
