Color, now regarded as the American spelling, in fact predates the United States by several centuries. In early use the spellings vied for ascendancy with several other spellings. Colur, culoure, and coolor, for instance, were all in the mix before the modern British spelling gained permanent prevalence in the 17th century.1 The American preference for color took hold in the middle 19th century thanks in large part to the conscious simplification of English spellings by people such as the lexicographer Noah Webster. </> Webster reportedly did that to separate US English from British English because the US had separated itself from England.

The Yanks didn't "invent" that spelling anyway. http://grammarist.com/spelling/color-colour/ -- Where's the Vangelis music? You may not like the evolution. You may cling to what you were taught. You will die. English today is not Shakespeare's English. And English in 100 years will not be at all like English today.

Not different at all. Once literacy hits 80% or so, language doesn't change much. In Shakespeare's time, the English of 1190 (or even 1400) was not intelligible and was a different language, but the English of Shakespeare is still understandable today with very little effort. "Se godspellere Lucas sægð on þyssen godspelle" for example, was from a sermon given in 1150. Hell, in the 12th-16th centuries Middle English still had at least 5 letters that were not part of the modern English Shakespeare spoke, not to mention the use of diatricital marks that had compeltely fallen out of use a few hundred years earlier. -- http://2blog.kreme.com There is something to be said for grace and respect but humour alway helps - Toby Morris

Just look at the words the OED imports every year. Yep. Of course English is different today to what it was in 1915. There are lots of words and phrases that have been dropped, created, and altered. The language has changed a lot even just in the last 20 years. Unfortunately English in another 100 years will be more infested with incorrect spellings and wrong meanings thanks to the pervasiveness of American culture. :-(

Well, if there really is any such thing as corrective entropy, aka
serendipity, perhaps we'll lose all those superfluous 'u's we've been
talking about (colour, honour, etc). :-D

I've seen trailers for US movies with the "coming" date in mm.dd.yy format. Horrid. And not even for horror shows. Here's one: http://www.razorfine.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/captain-america-winter-soldier-poster-5.jpg But maybe that's not an American movie... Here's another. http://www.impawards.com/2013/posters/enders_game.jpg [1] Not American too? Of course not. Takes place in space. My error. Side note: Pretty good SF book when I read it decades ago... movie, well... okay.

I've got emails dating back to 2001 from coworkers who used it way back then, and all the way up until now as well. I see it all over the place. A lot of tech companies do it on their business cards.
