have windows7 OS on Dell and OS-X v 10.9.5 on mac mini

Too many unsatisfactory experiences on both with reliability of CD and DVD disks. Should I just discard remaining unformatted disks and use only flash drives? Never have had one of them to fail; weak link with them seems to hubs rather than the media.

People are moving away from optical media for sure. You can get an 8-gig
flash drive for a couple of bucks, cheaper than a dual-layer DVD that
will fail the first time anyway, and can't be re-written. I've got a few
32-gig "sticks" that I bought online for under ten dollars.

Having said that, I've never had any real problems burning CD-Rs or
DVD-Rs (other than the dual-layer ones), and I was notorious for buying
cheap ones. They're just very small these days. I haven't burnt a dvd
for a year or more.

I'd keep your unformatted discs around, though, especially the CD-Rs.
You never know when the wife will ask "can you make a copy of this for

My answer to that would be "Sure. Here's the Dropbox URL for her."

Heh. My SIL thinks a dropbox is outside the post office, and that URL
rhymes with earl. Actually, I was thinking about music cds.

Many people, including computer professionals, engineers, and
programmers say "earl" for URL. Not a majority, I don't think, but it is
not all that unusual.

Ugh. I dislike dropbox a lot.

Most of those will fit onto a 1Gig card. If you can still find a card
so small. I doubt I have any of those so I'd just send her a *lot* of
albums.
And maybe a film or two, and some astronomy or science images that
are pretty and maybe a mail-reader or two and a Unix ISO and ...
Oh, and a self-extracting textfile that lists everything.

I have *never* heard that, but I'm in England so we may have a
slightly different accent from you. Here it's "hurl" without the
"aitch" at the beginning.
 Unless it's pronounced "linkie".
But I suspect only I do that.

That's pretty much how Americans pronounce earl.

The person on the other side was a young woman. Very obviously a young
woman. There was no possible way that she could have been mistaken for a
young man in any language, especially Braille.

Really? I've heard it as "Ehrrrll" and "Ehrull" in "Law and Order"
but I don't think I've ever heard it as "URL".
Now the name "Carl" (?) I have heard as "Krraaal", "Cuhrrl",
"Cahrroll"" and "Cahlll", all from the same character in a different
TV program but I put that down to piss-poor sound engineering and to
my ears being attuned to another accent. Another *set* of accents.
I wouldn't be surprised were you right, and you being a USALien are
vastly more likely to be right than I am so I'll consider myself
slightly more educated in the ways of furriners. Thank you.

Yeah but (and this isn't just about the SIL) a lot of people still have
a CD player and a pretty decent amp and a pair of reasonable speakers
and want to put the disc in the tray and have the music come out while
they sit with a gin and tonic and peruse the info on the little jewel
case.

In our house, everything is FLAC, because I like it and because I have
disk drives just for that, and XBMC; but we still have a shelf of CDs
(I've ripped the ones we listen to a lot).

Very true. Probably always will be.

Why, apart from your preference, FLAC?

Lossless. Although, I'm aware that the 320 MP3s are indistinguishable. I
like everything the same, I guess. FLAC is a real standard.

I just airplay from my phone to my speakers. Or from my phone to the Sonos.

All (nearly) of my music is 256K AAC, undistinguishable to human ears
from 24 bit 192kHz "HD" music.

For my part I use it personally and professionally. Pretty much
seamless. I've only had issues a couple times and it's a great way to
share date with ... well anyone.

And their 'Events' (keeping so many previous edits of files) has saved
my butt a couple times with munged up Excel files.

I've rarely heard anyone pronounce it that way in my line of work.

In my entire life, I've only ever heard one person pronounce "URL" to
rhyme with "girl" or "earl". That person was my paternal grandmother,
who had about as much clue about computers and the internet as I have
about the finer points of contract law in Pakistan. Everybody else I've
ever heard say it has pronounced it "you are ell".

And if you're using Microsoft Explorer, then "you are *in* 'ell". ;-)

Most normal people simply call it a "web[site] address".

Even though that's only just barely correct, and only when it starts
"http://" or "https://".

Ferinstance, when's the last time you met a "web[site] address" that
started "news://" or "ftp://" or "telnet://" or "magnet://" or (need I
continue? Didn't think so...)
