No manufacturer or wireless network allowed to add thyeir bloatware onto the Apple device and everyone gets the same OS irrespective of whom they bought the device from. And this also means that when Apple issues software updates, everyone can install them. In the case of Android, software updates are first sent to hardware manufacturers who *can* then decide to generate a hardware specific update which is then sent to wireless carriers who *can* then decide to issue an update (containing their own bloatware) to their customers.

Apple has / does install their own "bloatware" though ... things like Garageband, Dashboard, that silly "@" on a spring icon, etc. that few people actually use / interested in, or in some cases don't even know exists. Whenever I'm setting up a new Mac removing the excess rubbish from the Dock is one of the tasks on the list.

If I'm thinking of the same thing he is, the "@-on-a-spring" is a way-too-complex-to-bother-with way of opening up the current incarnation of Apple's "This is the latest version of Mac OS X" web page. Don Bruder: > Dashboard was (at least IMO) a great idea that got so much junk loaded > on top of it that it turned into s**t. ?? I can only assume that you don't know how to use Dashboard. That was another problem with Dashboard ... many of the Widgets are US-centric making them completely useless for those outside America. The same thing still happens now with many iOS apps.

I am in that group. The unit conversion widget is one of the few uses I have for Dashboard, because it's quick and easy to use. I don't expect all Mac users to use Dashboard, but I'm certainly glad I can use it. : ) -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. If you want to convert millimeters to inches or dollars to pounds or pounds to euros the widgets work equally well on either side of the pond. I don't know how well the air carrier tracker works on domestic flights outside the US because I've never had a reason to try it. I suspect not so well since there may not be a good source of timely position data outside the US and Eurocontrol. -- John Varela

From memory (since I don't have Dashboard on this ancient Mac), there was a Yellow Pages widget, as one example, which was completely useless to anyone outside the USA.

No idea what you're referring to. Probably something seen in the past
that I deemed not useful.

I've got 8 widgets there. Over the years removed the cruft, downloaded
and tried out some, rejected most, kept a few, removed those no longer
wanted.
It's useful to me.
