If you partition a disk, you destroy all that is on the disk, so, yes, you
will have to reinstall to OS.

false.

live partitioning has been possible for quite a while, and is exactly
what boot camp assistant does.

I've been doing it in *Windows* for over a decade, so it can't be
that difficult.
I know it's easy in MacOSX, too, but I've never needed to do it
there.
 http://macs.about.com/od/applications/ss/diskutilitypart.htm
"Partitioning is a quick process. It will probably take longer to read
this article than to partition your hard drive."
 Two seconds of searching.
Oh, "partition" and "format" are *COMPLETELY* different ideas.
"Partition" just makes more drives and moves data around to fit,
"format" *does* destroy stuff if you do it correctly.

That hasn't been true for a while now, but it is still *ALWAYS*
advisable to make a back-up first.

Running Linux in a virtual machine is a far better option, IMO. No need
to reboot, and you can do it for free with VirtualBox. Also, since Mac
OS X is Unix, you should consider whether you really need Linux to begin
with since the vast majority of "Linux" stuff runs just fine in Mac OS X.

I would do a linux install with macosx running in a virtualbox to
use itunes. If it's possible. Someone mentioned that linus runs
linux on his laptop.

If not than it'll stay on sno leopard

reason to go to linux is because there are no more updates
to snow leopard and some sites starting to complain about it
when browsing and yosemite's too big to download

linux stuff runs fine if you setup the linux packaging env which
I won't do

Don't you have to recompile it? I was curious to try out Gimp but
didn't have the time to figure out how to recompile it. Something
called "Fink"?

While most popular Unix open source software projects are easily
compiled for Mac OS X, the most popular titles have pre-compiled Mac OS
X binaries available. GIMP is just one such project. You can download
pre-compiled binaries here:

<http://www.gimp.org/downloads/>

> Something called "Fink"?

Fink is a Mac OS X open source package manager and associated library of
ported software using Debian Linux tools, similar to MacPorts and
others, which may be useful to people who are not comfortable compiling
their own stuff.

Drifting a bit here. OS X compiles a lot of stuff "out of the box." I
just installed a nice fresh Yosemite into a firewire drive attached to
our MacBook Pro 4,1 (2.5 GHz). Just to see how long (and how difficult)
it would take me to bring it up to "our standards" with the stuff we
need on it.

I installed iTerm2 (binary) which I prefer. I use a pager called "most"
that needs compiling and requires the slang library to run. I typed
"gcc" at the prompt, and the clever little Mac went out and downloaded
and installed the developer tools for me. I downloaded slang and it
compiled clean and nice and then it (the Mac) compiled most for me. I
installed ncftp (binary) so I could bring in my dotfiles, and my
aliases, and my $PATH; I turned on the zshell and I was in business.

OS X ships with a useless out-of-date rsync, but the very latest is a
quick download (along with some patch files) and it compiled quick and
clean. Now I was ready to keep BusyCal (fresh download from the App
Store) and Stickies and the Contacts in quick sync (I have little shell
scripts for them).

This all took about 2 hours, not (obviously) including installation of
the OS.

Now it's just reinstalling the Apps the oul' Woman wants, bringing in
her Mail files and her Firefox bookmarks.

The MacBook Pro needs a repair: the internal HD (or possibly its cable)
is shot, but it boots happily from external drives. It's a backup/travel
machine, so it just has to have the Calendar and the Mail and the
Contacts and some apps. Once it's repaired, and nicely set up on the
external drive, I'll just do a restore to the new internal drive.

Yosemite seems pretty snappy too.

Ncftp? Hrmph! Rsync. Learn it. Live it. Love it.

(although, anymore, I keep those files on dropbox and simply link to
them on a new machine).

ln -s ~/Dropbox/shell/.bashrc .
ln -s ~/Dropbox/shell/.slrnrc .

> OS X ships with a useless out-of-date rsync,

It is out of date. I don't see how it is useless as it works just fine.
I only bother to compile rsync on my main machines; on the others the
pre-installed one is fine.

I used to install ncftp, but it's been years since I used ftp for anything.

I do the oul' Woman's backups, and I get "protocol mismatches" if I
don't keep the rsyncs up to date.

It's true, though, that if all you want is

rsync -avs [etc]

the old one works just fine.

Ncftp is great, once you get the hang of the bookmarks.

Protocol mismatches are just warnings. The sync still works.

I use my rmv alais daily (it's how I move large files from drive to drive).

alias rmv='rsync -a --remove-source-files --stats -h '

> Ncftp is great, once you get the hang of the bookmarks.

Great if you use ftp, which I don't. Rsync and ssh covere everything,
and much more, that I ever used ftp for.

Even scp would be an even better method. FTP is insecure, and rsync may
not be available everywhere. That said, if rsync is available, the
synchronization functionality is extremely useful for copying large
numbers of files.

Same here. I use it often and it works fine.
