That's not the best example; even in the UK the US version is used a

And he mentions it over and over again here in these news groups, as if
doing so is somehow going to discourage Americans from using their
version. It's silly.

But the Brits were the first to combine a dish of curry with a portion
of chips, prior to throwing up on the pavement outside take-away just
before midnight. The Welsh I think invented it, in fact. "I'll have
threepenn'orth of chips, dai, and whack on a bit of the ol' curry sauce"
in the accent of Tom Jones.

Some of the "curry" dishes sold in the UK (and copied elsewhere) were
actually "invented" in the UK and don't actually exist in the supposed
country of origin, like India.

Well, I was walking down the High Road
And this guy stops me
He'd just got in from New Zealand
And he was looking for mushy peas
I said, no, we hadn't really got 'em round here
I said, but we do got
Balti, Bhindi, strictly Hindi
Dall, Halal and I'm walking down the road
We got rocksoul, okra, bombay duck-ra

The ability to ask question like 'Where am I and who is the "I" that is
asking?' is one of the things that distinguishes mankind from, say,
cuttlefish. --The Last Continent

Potato chips were invented at a hotel restaurant in Saratoga Springs,
NY when a customer complained that his fried potatoes weren't crisp
enough. (Some versions of the story say he complained that they were
too thick)

I think you better sort out what you mean by "chip", first. Savageduck is
talking about what Americans would call a french fry, which are called
"chips" in the UK. Also, what Americans call "chips" are called "crisps"
in the UK.
And in the UK, their creation is attributed to English food writer William
Kitchiner. The difference leads me to believe that no-one really knows.
