I have everything that I need, but I am getting a refurbed iMac i3 or i5
for my iTunes and music libraries. I am not getting OSX for Safari or
Mail, as I have Chrome/Firefox/Thunderbird on Linux, also a good NNTP
reader, Pan, so will not have to use my old Hogwasher that is on my G4.
I do not do graphics, photography or desktop publishing, so do not need
all that glitz.

... The typical Linux zealot's refrain: but it does what I need, and I
don't need anything more, really, I don't. Anything Linux doesn't do, I
don't really need. Really, I don't. Anything more is all just glitzy
rubbish!

Uh huh... Keep your head in the sand.

I'm definitely not a zealot, well, maybe I was about OS/2, ran it from
1994 to 2008 and got involved in the "Steve Bartko" newsgroup rants! I
am retired and don't do all the stuff you apparently do. I only just
today got a smartphone, a Moto E! I don't even use my old digital camera
hardly at all, and don't really take pictures with my phone. I do have a
bunch of old photos taken off of SD card in my G4 iPhoto program, but just
save them there, don't manipulate them, enhance them, etc.
I still have an old IBM PS/2 running OS/2 Warp Connect, and am finding
myself going back to that simple machine more and more. Even getting
sick of youtube. My old IBM NewsReader/2 is text only, and am finding it
just as easy as Pan or even easier than Hogwasher or the Thoth that I
bought many years ago.
I am not an operating system zealot/advocate, and yes, I guess i do have
everything that I need, except for that refurbed iMac that will be
ordered in a few days!

Well that's good to hear. We seem to have one or two that are regulars
here, and more of them isn't what the world needs! : )

Yeah, that's very different from my usage.

You aren't alone in that! With all the mandatory ads and broken videos
of late, Youtube has really gone downhill.

I'm using slrn and love it. But then I'm at home in a terminal window.

Do you remember him? That damned Microsoft shill who was trolling the
newsgroups back in the 90's and putting down OS/2! He was exposed as an
employee of MS and it brought down a lot of crap in those days! I really
hated John Dvorak for his waffling about OS/2 and his shilling for MS in
the days of PC Magazine.

That's actually where I lived - off Parmer. Small world. : )

I don't miss a few things about Austin: the heat, the Williamson County
police, the nutty drivers, the endless oversized monster trucks and
petite women in huge SUVs, or the cowboys. : D

photoshop and the rest of the adobe creative suite, lightroom,
microsoft office, final cut pro, imovie, 1password, itunes, ios device
support, garmin gps device support, other hardware device support,
along with zillions of other apps that will never, ever run on linux.

also, driver support for hardware is often a no-go on linux, sometimes
buggy open source crap which has zero support if anything goes wrong.

linux is great for servers, but for a desktop system it's horrible.

That's not much and I know there are analogues on linux and in fact
the BIG special effects houses write their own on linux all the time
because of the large community of software devs that use/know linux
they can get things done quickly and can modify the program if they
find bugs. IOW they can be more productive then waiting on a vendor.

oh I use my garming gps on linux

You're not talking from experience, driver support in linux is
unbelievable and astonishing really

> linux is great for servers, but for a desktop system it's horrible.

These are old anachronisms that you're just chanting
it really is cult-like behavior
at least most linux people are completely fine with criticisms

but apple/aapl people seem to react like cornered animals
it's not a good stance

yes it is

> and I know there are analogues on linux

none that are anywhere near as good.

the gimp, for instance, is roughly where photoshop was 10 years ago.

> and in fact
> the BIG special effects houses write their own on linux all the time

they use linux as a render farm.

on the desktop, they use mac or windows with final cut pro, avid, etc.,
which that pushes a job to the render farm.

wrong.

> oh I use my garming gps on linux

garmin does not support linux. none of their software runs on linux.
whatever you did to get it to work was effort that mac/win users did
not need to do.

unbelievable and astonishingly bad, you mean.

lots of products do not have drivers at all, which means support is
someone's hack based on limited information of the hardware if it
exists at all.

for instance, there is no ios support other than a crappy driver that
doesn't work very well.

so are apple people. nothing is perfect and everything has limitations.

what people are not ok with is bullshit and outright lies.

> but apple/aapl people seem to react like cornered animals
> it's not a good stance

you have that backwards. linux people react when reality is stuffed int
their face.

I just installed that I don't know photoshop but gimp is great so
far and there's one for macosx

They use it for their entire workflow

just 'nother strange aapl-cult chanter type

talking without knowledge of the talk

also reminder that if garmin doesn't write for linux that's their
choice, but why would any publically traded company limit their
market share

Wonder what the shareholders have to say about Garmin not supporting
linux

> unbelievable and astonishingly bad, you mean.

no examples
<shrug>

> for instance, there is no ios support other than a crappy driver that

that's aapl's choice so why blame linux

most linux users don't want a creepy proprietary iphone anyway though

Aapl doesn't care about supporting linux users who have an iphone
because they don't have to
Wonder what the shareholders have to say about aapl not supporting
linux I mean why limit market share
penetration should be paramount
someone needs to talk to aapl execs

photoshop elements, which is about $50 street price, does much more
than the gimp ever will and substantially faster too.

the gimp is not even worth free, it's that bad.

> also reminder that if garmin doesn't write for linux that's their

because there are so few linux users that it's not worth the effort.
they'll *never* recover their engineering and support costs.

that's why just about every company doesn't bother with linux.

> Wonder what the shareholders have to say about Garmin not supporting

they're happy and quite possibly insist on it, because otherwise garmin
would be in worse shape than they currently are.

They would applaud Garmin for not wasting money to try to support such
a minuscule market segment.

It's Linus' fault, not Apple's.

They say the same thing that Garmin shareholders say; they applaud
Apple for not wasting money to try to support such an insignificant
market share.

linux users think that linux is hot shit; well, that's true only if the
computer overheats.

Nope, as a Linux software developer I can say OSS drivers are generally
pretty crappy.

You are a delusions numpty moron.

> oh I use my garming gps on linux

That's nice. It's not supported, often does NOT work, and you have no
recourse when it breaks.

>> also, driver support for hardware is often a no-go on linux, sometimes

> You're not talking from experience, driver support in linux is

No, it's utter crap. Heck, just in print drivers you are looking at
weird gneeric drivers that generally support none of a printer's
features (like duplex, for example).

>> linux is great for servers, but for a desktop system it's horrible.

> These are old anachronisms that you're just chanting

Nope. Just keeping an ubuntu system up-to-date on Firefox and VLC is an
arduous process that takes fucking forever and fails all the damn time.
I know, there's an old guy at my coffee shop who was given a laptop with
Ubuntu on it. Anytime he tries to update Firefox, it breaks his system.

So now he doesn't update at all, so his security is shit.

I usually try to get with him every month or three to update some
critical stuff, but it is a fucking clusterfuck.

The last lovely time he had was when the updates completely disabled his
wifi. He had to get someone else (not me) to reinstall all the wifi
stuff, which wiped all his wifi passwords. Lovely desktop experience.
Fuck, Windows 95 is a better choice.
