When I reply to an e-mail, Mail closes the e-mail to which I am replying. There are times I don't want it to do that; is there any way to stop that behavior?

In Apple Mail? On a Mac?
Not here. Message remains open whether in the list view with window
pane or an opened separate window after replying to it.

On My machine, if the incoming message is open in a separate window, replying to it changes the window to the reply window.

Quite. Even on Snow Leopard. The OP should hold down the option key when hitting the reply button if he is doing so to an email that opens in it's own separate window. The email he is replying to will remain, he might need to move his reply window aside to see it, it will certainly be there when he finishes replying. -- dorayme

Thank you, I will give that a try. Most of the time it doesn't matter but sometimes it's pesky, such as when I have to write different replies to different people for the same e-mail.

Fine. And when the reply is "sent" the prior message remains visible
whether in a separately opened window to read it or in the message pane
of the mail app.

Here's the sequence I observe: 1. I open a message in its own window. 2. I type ⌘ R to reply. 3. The original message window closes. 4. A new reply window appears in the same location on the screen. 5. I click the Send button. 6. The reply window closes and the message is sent. The original message window never re-appears. Mac OS X 10.9.1 with Mail 7.1. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. Use a real news client instead. JR

Same thing here, but it appears to he that in steps 3 and 4 in your narrative, I don't see a window closing or one opening; i.e., there are no associated animations‹it looks like the window's content changes.

I wish that would happen automagically with Mail on any OS X install I have ever used... but it doesn't and it never has in any version of Mail I have used going back to 10.0.3. When I reply, Mail closes the original message window and opens the window for the reply; when I send the reply and it closes, I am looking the message list window and have to reopen the message to read it or reply to it again.

When I'm reading mail from my inbox and I hit reply, my inbox remains the same (displaying the mail I was reading) but a new window with the reply opens up on top of my inbox. So I gather something different happens for you?

I essentially never do that, so I hadn't noticed that phenomenon. "Don't hold it that way?"

It feels claustrophobic to me, so I always open e-mails in a new window to read them (this is also one of the reasons I don't like Thunderbird as a newsreader). Apple's switch to a "conversational" view of threads when one does that is something I find that I like.

I prefer the new window approach too, but don't use it with mail.app because when I delete a message it doesn't automatically open the next message (in its own window) in the queue like Claris Emailer did. So I use the three-pane system because having the next message opened is more important to me.

Basically, I want Mail to operate in some ways like MT-NewsWatcher did now that I think about it. I'd like to be able to space bar my way through the mail queue, too. It also will not move on to the next thread (sorry, conversation") when you get to the end of the current one. It's a shame, because I also don't like the three-pain¹ view, but getting through email quickly is more important. ¹ That is not a tyop. -- The Germans wore gray, you wore blue.
