In article <mgp0q6$kgn$1@dont-email.me>, "Dean" <deanc1029@yahoo.com> wrote: > Can anyone help? I can dump the audio files from a 5th Gen iPod Nano to a Mac. However (and to my mind, this is a pretty big "however"), what you'll end up with is a folder stuffed with a bunch of files with names like "08A91F4C26BDE7.mp3", and *NO* metadata of any kind (unless there's something useful actually buried in ID3 tags within the files) being preserved. I don't have (or have access to) an iPhone of any generation to try my method and determine if it'd be useful on those. Unfortunately, the process for dumping an iPod's audio onto a Mac isn't something I can tell you how to do - It's not that I consider it "secret" or anything, it's just that it's one of those "I can do it, but I couldn't *TELL* you how if my life depended on it" things... If you were sitting here next to me, I could SHOW you how I do it, but trying to *TELL* you is, for me, a task on a par with brain surgery - I could try, but the results probably wouldn't be at all pretty or useful. Be aware that the capability to grab data from the iPod (and presumably the iPhone, and probably the iPad) is intentionally crippled - If you could just go to your buddy's house, load his iTunes library onto your device, then bring it home and plug it into your machine and snatch it into your own library easily, piracy would be too simple, and I doubt the iTunes store would have anything to sell, since the music folks would have told Apple to take their idea and shove it where the sun doesn't shine and the air quality is highly questionable. The way things are, Apple can honestly say "Look, we don't provide any capability to do any such thing - in fact, we make it a point to wipe anything on the iDevice that isn't already in the library our software uses before allowing our software to work with that device! Doesn't that prove we're anti-piracy?" -- Security provided by Mssrs Smith and/or Wesson. Brought to you by the letter Q

Who said anything about "without consent"? Load your iPod with music. Unplug it. Take it to your buddy's house and plug it into his Mac. Until you say "Yeah, go ahead and clobber it", iTunes won't let you do squat with it. -- Security provided by Mssrs Smith and/or Wesson. Brought to you by the letter Q

Only to you. > it will not erase anything unless the user says do it. > otherwise it's left untouched. Sure it's left untouched. It also refuses to permit any further operation against the device until such time as the user says "Yeah, go ahead and wipe it". If you synch from your buddy's computer, you can't add something from your own library, you can't transfer what came from his machine to yours, you can't delete individual items from it - in short, you can't do jack shit with the device until you permit iTunes to wipe it. > it also has nothing to do with piracy and everything to do with syncing > to one host. I guarantee that it has to do with piracy. If it were "just" about synching, there'd be no problem whatsoever in adding stuff from "foreign" libraries. Or doing any other operation against the device without requiring it to first be wiped. -- Security provided by Mssrs Smith and/or Wesson. Brought to you by the letter Q

If you are really that desperate to get to the music files in your iOS device without using iTunes, just get "iMazing" (It actually works pretty well). <http://imazing.com> -- Regards, Savageduck
