I still have the phone number my inlaws got in 1963, though it is currently sitting as a mostly unused google voice number. I've tried to find a list of the old exchange names a few times, but haven't discovered it online. The ones I know are TA(bor), PE(arl), SP(ruce), RA(ce) and SU(nset) or possibly SU(ndown) which was a suburban exchange. Around 1950 Denver moved to 7 digit numbers, so a number like Pearl 1234 became Pearl3 1234. -- http://2blog.kreme.com Once upon a time, a woman was picking up firewood. She came upon a poisonous snake frozen in the snow. She took the snake home and nurse it back to health. One day the snake bit her on the cheek. As she lay dying, she asked the snake, "Why have you done this to me?" And the snake answered, "Look, bitch, you knew I was a snake."

Actually, I had trouble memorizing LU4-3307 and memorized it as 584-3307, anticipating all-digit dialing by about 15 years.

There doesn't seem to anything about it on Wikipedia. area codes are no longer optional in almost every case. mobile phones and anywhere with an overlay requires them, even if the call is going next door. the accepted format for nanp is now: +cc-npa-nxx-xxxx where cc is the country code, npa is the area code, nxx is the exchange and and x is any digit. thus, apple's main phone number would be: +1-408-996-1010 the +1 is often omitted, especially for those who don't expect any international phone calls.

There doesn't seem to anything about it on Wikipedia. Using () around area code / toll codes *should* make it easier for people who don't have to use them. For example, telephone numbers in the Auckland region of New Zealand have the area code 09, but people within Auckland don't need to dial that, so listing a phone number as "(09)123-4567" makes it more obvious. Unfortunately it's not quite that simple in reality since, thanks to idiocy at Telecom NZ years ago and the huge spread of the "Auckland region", people phoning to / from the outlying areas of Auckland do have to be dialled using the 09 code. :-\ It gets worse since international caller shouldn't include the 0, meaning they have to phone "+64-(0)9-123-4567".

When 10 digit dialing became common (early 90's?) then using the brackets became somewhat of an anachronism. I've even sent print jobs back (thousands of business cards) because the printer decided on his own to add the parenthesis and even hyphens. eg: I sent him: 123 576 2101 he printed: (123) 576-2101 Back they went...

Okay, so one time? In band camp? Paul Magnussen <magiconinc@earthlink.net> was all, like: > nospam wrote: >> using () for area codes is obsolete. > Have you a reference? There doesn't seem to anything about it on Wikipedia. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_conventions_for_writing_telephone_numbers> "The traditional formatting convention for phone numbers is (NPA) NXX-XXXX, where NPA is the area code and NXX-XXXX is the subscriber number. The NXX prefix of the subscriber number indicates the local telephone exchange or rate center. The format can be written NPA-NXX-XXXX, or as 1-NPA-NXX-XXXX when including the number 1, the long-distance trunk access code. Sometimes the stylized format NPA.NXX.XXXX is seen, more common since the rise of the Internet and the dot-separated notation of domain names. "Originally, local calls within an area code could be placed by dialing NXX-XXXX (omitting the area code), known as 7-digit dialing. The traditional formatting convention included the area code in parenthesis to indicate that dialing the area code for local calls was optional. Calling a number in a different area code required dialing that code first (i.e., NPA-NXX-XXXX) known as 10-digit dialing. Most codes retain these rules today; in these areas, phone numbers continue to be written as 7-digit numbers, and frequently appear on signage for local stores. "With the rapid growth of telephony in the late 20th century, large metropolitan areas saw the introduction of overlay codes in the mid and late 1990s. With two or more area codes becoming available in the same vicinity, mandatory ten-digit dialing rules were instituted, requiring the area code to be dialed for all calls. The trunk code 1 remains optional for local calls in some of these areas." -- http://2blog.kreme.com 'You know the worst of it?' said Rincewind. 'Oook?' Equally bad are people (including Apple) who insist on writing the time using a decimal point. It's not "1.30pm", it should be "1:30pm" with a colon (or if you really want to use a decimal point, try "1.5pm").

One of my pet peeves is including the 'm' in 'am' or 'pm' when using the
12-hour clock. It's not needed; why use it? 1:30p tells you everything
you need to know.

Technically, yes, but using lowercase and no dots means the time takes up less space, especially on my Mac's menubar. :-)

My current screen is only a 17" CRT (by the time some applications add
a load of menu titles, it can be quite crowded) ... but I started using
9" Mac Plus displays. When the OS allows, I have also tended to use a
skinnier font :-)

Competitions often list their closing date / time as being either "midnight" (with no numbers) or "11:59pm". The same often happens with marketing launches saying "midnight" or "12:01am".

Mine is using idiotic phone-words instead of phone-numbers. Having 0800-IDIOTS-R-US may be easier to remember, but it's more difficult to dial (which is why often the idiots put both the phone-word and the phone-number).
