By the way, here is a list of third-party apps that should appear the
day the Watch is released.

Well, that's a pissload. The Parking Meter app looks useful.

A watch with an 18 hour battery life is not exactly that great. I feel
that even calling it a watch is a bit of a misnomer - it's a second
screen for the iPhone.

it's comparable to other smart watches (other than the pebble).

it's also 18 hours in 'typical' use, which will vary per person. it's
up to 72 hours in power saver mode.

Yep. Apple are planning release WatchKit to allow developers to create
watch-only apps "later this year" (many people are guessing that it
will be at the Developers Conference in a few months, alongside "watch
OS 2"). Even now the Apple Watch can already do some simple things by
itself.

watch os 2 is not coming out in a few months.

apps will be at some point, and wwdc is a reasonable guess, at least
for information about it.

And a far-too-expensive iPhone accessory, IMHO.. I wouldn't mind buying one but
they model I wanted was 1000 bucks. I'd rather buy the new Macbook for the wife

The model I want (stainless with the Milanese loop) is $649, but I'll

Marie Antoinette had a watch that provided it's own energy to run continuously.

I have a Seiko Kinetic that winds itself. I have another Seiko that
charges itself by ambient light sources.

I can't understand why Apple, who usually are the innovators, didn't do
a better job on this.

If you forget to charge this every day, all you have is a paperweight...

they don't use anywhere near as much power as a smartwatch does and a
smartwatch doesn't have anything to wind anyway.

what do you suggest?

you could strap a giant battery to your wrist and get a month's run
time but not too many people will be happy with that.

> If you forget to charge this every day, all you have is a paperweight...

nope. you have a watch that drops into power saver mode and becomes
*just* a watch for up to 3 days.

people are already used to charging phones at night and most people
take off their watch to sleep so it's not that big of a deal.

Gosh, three days. Astonishing.

No I'm not. I charge mine about every three or four months. It's
powered off most of the time.

I didn't wear a watch for the better part of 12 years. Then I got one,
and now have trouble remembering to put it on.

Personally I think this device will fail, because it doesn't give me
anything I need. But then neither does a smartphone or satnav, for the
most part.

So, what you are saying is that you personally thinking it will fail is

Look, I can see (just about) that a smartphone or satnav could be
useful. I'd be more likely to use a map rather than the latter, at
least that way there's no danger of me driving off Beachy Head. But a
satnav could be useful for instance for us when we go to France, in
navigating a town where we don't know the local geography. We've been
thinking about that for the last 12 years, and are likely to go on
thinking about it for the next 12 years too.

Smartphone with a camera. Yeah, I could see that to catch shots of
those bank raids and strafing runs by low-flying communist aircraft
that are a daily feature of my life, but I really can't be arsed.

Meanwhile, what does little watchy give me. Sod all, near as I can make
out.

A high hanging fastball is a bad pitch that is thought to be the easiest
