it took a long time to figure this out
if you have an imac take note

lots of problems when burning cds and dvds
audio cds were the biggest problem as the burned discs would have
problems midway into the cd

dvds also had problems some would just not read

turns out that the aluminum slot in the side of the imac is not well
deburred during manufacture so unless you insert and remove the disc
with surgical precision you get a big scratch on the business side
of the disc

this was really puzzling and made the more so due to the problem
not always rearing its ugly head

some cd players just had a little problem and went right along
but older players with less forgiving hard/firm ware just would
not continue

also still checking the itunes library as cds may have had scratches
introduced when importing them

had to go back and check data dvds and that was a PITA for someone

LOL

I've seen lots and lots of slot-loading aluminum iMacs. On precisely
none of them has the slot ever been anything but perfectly smooth.

Sometimes the CD/DVD drives on the vertical iMacs do have issues with
slipping and becoming misaligned with the slot, but it's rare and
usually caused by someone opening the iMac up and not putting things
back properly.

The more likely cause of discs not being able to be read is due to bad
recordable media or older players that simply can't read RW discs or
even older players that can't read R discs either ... in both cases the
el cheapo brands (both disc and player) are often the worst culprits.

As for scratches, that happens with *all* slot-loading drives over
time. It's caused by user-mishandling of the disc during insertion and
ejection, but also thanks to the mechanism which pulls the disc in and
pushes it out.

There's also the issue of debris on the lens. A $10 lens cleaner kit from
the electronics store has revived a failing optical drive for me several
times.

Well you're certainly proving you aren't clever.

ok at least you acknowledge there is a problem and you checked each
one of the imacs you worked on

i was surprised too and was why the problem was hard to find

Nope.

You're assuming that the issue was faulty machining at the factory...

But, some jerk, a wannabe "computer consultant", has seen "lots and lots" of slot-loading aluminum iMacs that were fine. So in IT'S little pea brain, that means every, single one of them, is perfect. Wadda dick.

Never had a single issue with my last iMac (24") that had a slot for
CD/DVD. And I did burn a lot of disks (on the order of 100 over the
years that I had that machine).

Most disks held on the order of 3 GB (DVD) or 500 MB (CD).

I sort of miss that machine as I would copy from an external drive to
the built in burner. Now I have to read the disk to a ramdisk and burn
from that (I re-copy after a disk is 5 years old).

I know many people with many Macs and your post is the sole instance
I've heard of the issue.
